I was just thinking - with the continued price rises and inflation creeping up , there will probably be a switch to five pound coins from notes in around 10 years time

I could see a £5 coin, but more likely is that 1p & 2p coins are demonetized

I think we are already half way there considering that all coins under 20p are now mostly made of steel ....

It could just be me, but I do not seem to get as many £5 notes in my change anymore?

Personally I would like to see a circulating £5 coin, (hopefully smaller than the current £5 coins).

Maybe a tri-metalic issue ...

A Five Pound coin will inevitably be introduced, but at the current inflation rate, expect to wait much longer than 10 years.
With the current size of the two pound coin, a five pounder needs to be a little bigger and heavier.
That situation may precipitate a complete re hash of the sizes of the coins generally.

I agree that marz' suggestion could provide an answer. The technology exists.

That prompts a question:
What is currently the largest COMMONLY circulating coin in the World?
The answer to this question could provide some inspiration for the answer to the original one asked in this thread.

Largest by size (diameter/weight) or by value?
If by size, no idea (assuming Eisenhower dollars don't count).
If by value, the Swiss 5 franc just barely beats the Japanese 500 yen (both just over $5). Might be the largest in size too (31.45mm) - or at least I can't think of anything larger.

The Australian 50c is slightly larger at 31.65mm: http://www.ramint.gov.au/designs/ra...igns/50c.cfm

Yes, I believe the Aussie 50C piece is the biggest coin in the world for what it can buy (ie, a McDonald's soft serve coin).
