I managed to pick up a rather worn Charles I shilling. These are not my usual area (though I'm after one portrait coin from each British ruler).

The series seems to be quite a complex one so I'm wondering if anyone has any insight into a narrower identification

many thanks

If TWowoodheart (Richard) sees this he can tell you what it has bought.

Going by the Sharp nomenclature,

I'd say the crown mintmark and oval arms with scroll garniture at least puts this in group E.

Thanks very much for that link - quite a substantial work, it will take me some time to plough through it. I saw the crown mint mark which does help to narrow it down.

Thanks for trying Peter - just an internet gremlin

Yes. Your shilling is Spink 2791, Sharp E2/2. The crown mint mark dates it to between June 1635 and February 1626. I'm afraid I don't know the Krause number fo rit, sorry.

And I presume Peter meant me Bacchus. Tom Goodheart.

And struck at the Tower of London mint, under the King's authority, in case it's of interest!
