We all have our warning signs when shopping ebay: Low/poor feedback. Poor pictures. No return policy. Misleading/fraudulent claims. Etc., etc. Mine is clear expression of thought. Posted "as is" is the description for a $6000+ coin: UP FOR YOUR CODSIDERATION IS A VERY NICE & VERY RARE 1799 SILVER DOLLAR IF YOU LOOK AT THE OBVERSE THERE IS A DARK SPOT ON THE CENTER RIGHT HAND SIDE. I HAD IS COIN WEIGHT AND IT CAME OUT THE RIGHT ON . THERE WAS ONLY 423,515MADE. HOW MANY OF THOSE DO YOU THINK ARE LEFT IN THIS CONDITION? I HAVE SEEN A FEW OTHERS LISTED WITH A ASKING PRICE OF WAY MORE THAN I AM ASKING. YOU CHECK OUT THE PICTURES AND DESIDE YOUR IDEA OF THE COMDITION. CHECK BACK FOR MORE LISTINGS. THANKS FOR CHECKING MY SITE. I DO COMBINE SHIPPING. I would, if interested in the coin, pass on it. For I figure: If the seller puts this LITTLE effort into the description of the coin, where else might he/she have cut corners? Thank you for hearing me out.

If he went through the trouble to look up the mintage, see what others were selling for, etc and then pretty much beat around the bush in the listing without making any direct statements about HIS coin for sale I would watch out / buyer beware. Bad photos and vague descriptions in an auction from someone who deals in antiques or estate sales but does not specialize in any one area is somewhat understandable but if all you do is sell coins, especially $6K ones, you should at least try to make an effort at decent photos and a detailed description.

The seller had more non-coin items than coins. Another giveaway. You are correct, jack, he DID beat around the bush. I can only imagine what low price he paid to acquire it. Ah, well, I could have answered other posts but I remained in the background today, so far!
Back in the earlier days of the Internet, it was said that people could hide their true intentions. Or hide under false pretenses. Perhaps true, but WORDS betray.
It snags them every time!

I took a shot at attributing it with the help of earlydollars.org and came up with BB-158, B-16. Don't know if it is right. It may just be nothing but something just feels slightly off to me.

No, you're right, BB-158. Now I can see the die clash above the date. This could be cleaned/dipped/whizzed within an inch of its life and I wouldn't know; I'm no good at appraising that. But even if it is, it's a great early dollar. Guess there's no law against owning or selling one just because you misspell the word "consideration." Twice.

Your argument, sir? Counterfeit examples of BB-158 have been reported, and it would be neat if we could confirm this as one of them, with just these pics.

The 1970s die-transfer fakes of BB-158 (which aren't from China) are reported to have a notch in the R in LIBERTY, not evident here. Sounds like we need Steve Caruso!

I'd like to point out that he has 100% positive feedback with over 4000 sales.

Quote: I'd like to point out that he has 100% positive feedback with over 4000 sales he could just be making an honest mistake or he was talked into trying to snag $6,000 using his reputation and if it is counterfeited he can always say "I'm no coin collector or dealer, I don't know" interesting for a person with over 4,000 sales and a 100% FB on the bay, I would give them the benefit of the doubt that it was not an item listed with malfeasance other people in this hobby do much worse than make honest mistakes, they execute intentional moves
