Looks like basebal21's prediction of low MS70 populations for the half is coming pretty much true. I have been looking for 1 to slip in on ebay and the only ones I see are MS69 PCGS or NGC... I am guessing this isn't good considering those are the "first strikes". I am not a heavy 1st strike fan - because I think that is like creating a MS70+ rating, but that does kind of lead me to believe there is going to be a low population of MS70 coins at this point.

I cant find a MS70 anywhere for either. PCGS updated their population report, its by no means complete but for the halfs they have 377 MS 69s and 1 MS70. Thats a horrible ratio for a modern coin. It seems to be pretty obvious by now the MS 70 halfs will be few and far between if not unobtainable

The PCGS PF70 on ebay is over 400 bucks now. You know its a bad run when even the proof 70 halves are few and far between

NGC is fine with me so I must have done good but time will tell for sure. This must be a popular coin and yes the run must have had some problems if so few 70 grades. Wow

I think the real moral of all this happening twice recently is that Denver shouldnt be picked for commemorative halfs anymore.
Itll be real interesting to see where these end up, but this has all the makings of being a key to a modern half top pop set like the 89 Congress half.

It does look pretty bleak for these to see many popping up in MS70 by either grading service, and the PF70's look pretty slim as well. I am wondering if that isn't a result of the coins images not transferring well as much as poor quality control. That said, I agree that the Denver mint isn't doing itself any favors with these results.

Im not sure what the reason is the Denver mint struggles so bad with these, I know on mine it looked like bad marks like theyre being lazy and not doing them all by hand like the other mints do and sending them through a sorter of some sort. Either that or really bad qc

basebal - the proofs are pretty low numbers as well. Not as bad as the MS coins - but I saw a list that showed only 10 in PF70 so far from PCGS. I wasn't going to but I ended up snagging a NGC MS69 for $34. With the price increase today, I expect the mintage is going to stay pretty low on these. I think I saw one listing with just over 14k sold so far. I see the unc dollar isn't doing a whole lot better.

Im not shocked by the 10 pcgs pf70s only because I've only seen 1 on ebay and it was bidding well over 400 dollars at the time. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2013-S-5-St...em5af0518497Good lord up over 700 now. Easily the most expensive new release 70s I can ever remember for the halfs or dollars. As far as sales my personal theory for why theyre so low would be two things: 1. People were turned off by having basically the same reverse on every coin 2. For the halfs I think theres been a lot of returns and probably some people that stayed away remembering how the Army halfs went choosing to just wait and buy a graded one instead which are having no problem selling in any grade

Final price: $2,001.76. I may be proven wrong over time, but I think paying $2K for this brand new coin was just silly beyond silly! There will definitely be more coins graded proof 70 in the coming months. Maybe not thousands, but enough to drive the selling price for such coins well below the $2K price point. IMHO

Sweet baby jesus, 2k wow.
Like commems I will be shocked if that price holds over time. I dont expect there to be many of them but that just seems excessive. I got a MS70 statue of liberity ms70 for 1/5th of that and theres only around 30 of those.

Well... I got my MS69 NGC coin in the mail today. Ok maybe my standards for a MS69 are higher than theirs? I open the package and find a very clean very nice looking obverse and I turn the coin over and I find a bag mark. I am perplexed as to how a coin with and obvious bag mark would be returned to them with a MS69 - I'd expect any fault to be found would have to be pointed out and possibly using a microscope of a very good magnifying glass.
I am considering returning the coin to see if I can get another from the seller.
Is it expecting too much to think I shouldn't have bag marks on a MS69 coin?
