I always use the coin facts pictures as a comparison. Look here: http://www.coincommunity.com/us_lar...ron_head.aspFirst, on the obverse it appears some denticles are fused in upper left of the head. In the reverse I'm curious if that dot in the coin center is supposed to be there. The weird missing E piece you mentioned is suspect too. It's not my expertise but I would question those things. I recently purchased an 1852 large cent that perfectly matches the coin facts design.

Ken It's a nice looking coin. I don't see anything that concerns me about it's authenticity. The old coppers had lots of unique die markings which make them so interesting. There were 10 varieties in 1818 and so many different looks within the same year. Fused denticles, die cracks, large dot/small dot/no dot are all part of the varieties. I'll defer to an expert, but IMO it looks good.

Sorry to say but it's a known modern fake. Hope it's either returnable or you didn't pay much. Can't post a link, but google jinghuashei coins and you'll find it there.

BTW, was it from a pawn shop or an established coin shop? Either way, I'd bring it to their attention.

OldSkool - what features help you recognize the fake?
Did we miss anything that maybe you're looking at ?

I tried matching it to all known varieties and it didn't match any. Then I matched it to an image of the jinghuashei version and it matched exactly. It's a really good counterfeit. In the past it would have fooled me. In fact without matching the photos I might have bought it. The only thing odd is that the 8s on these coins have varying thickness (I'm sure there's a term for it), but on this, it's the same all the way around.

As OldSkool says it is a fake and there are several things that identify it as such. First are the denticals on the obv fro 7 to 12 o'clock. The denticals on the die went all the way out to the edge of the die. As a general rule you never see the out side nd of the denticals unless the die is misaligned or the coin is off.center. Star 6 points noticeable right of the coronet point. That is only true on the obv of N-7 and this is not N-7. On the reverse there is a large center dot. The only variety with a large center dot is the rev of N-2 and this is NOT N-2. So we have an obv and a rev that do not exist, bad denticals on the obv, and then there is the edge. These coins were struck without a collar and the edges of the coins are rounded, never flat like this coin is.

Hi guys I really appreciate your help on this. I went and checked that site that OldSkool mentioned and it sure looks like the 1818 on there except someone has toned this coin. Also the I in Liberty has a little extra to the top right of the coin and that matches the coin on the (jinghuashei coins) site. I'm glad I checked before I listed this on ebay. I called the coin shop and he said to bring it back in Monday. Another thing about the coin it looked a little on the grainy side under a loop so I wasn't feeling good about it being real. Again thanks a lot this is a very nice site I'm glad I found it. Ken

Conder- If stars 1-5 were shifted a bit clockwise, it would almost pass for an N-6 on the obverse. Scary.

Hi Ken. I wonder how your coin shop got this coin and how they didn't recognize it as a fake. Personally, I'd be a bit wary of the rest of their coins.

Quote: I tried matching it to all known varieties and it didn't match any. Thanks OldSkoolMadSkilz - I learned something and that's why I love this forum. Before I posted I also tried matching to the known varieties and while a couple of them were almost right I couldn't make an exact match. I didn't have the confidence to say that because varieties can be tricky.

I am curious about the sales price for this coin. A real coin in this kind of grade would be VERY pricey!!
