Ah, Okay basebal21. But if Kennedy is removed from the half, then, shouldn't we change some of the faces on our other coins (and banknotes) as well? How does everyone feel about that issue?

I personally don't want to change the people on our money, but I guess I'm just sentimental or something. Just like if the $500 and $1,000 bills were reissued, I'd still like to see William McKinley on the new $500 and Grover Cleveland on the new $1,000 bill, and if they ever dared to go so far, I'd like to see them keep James Madison on a reissued $5,000 bill and Salmon P. Chase on a reissued $10,000 bill. (And yes, if the banks could still make use of it, or actually allowed the general public to use it this time around, Woodrow Wilson retained on the $100,000 bill (which ain'y gonna happen any time soon) And of course, I feel all of these large denominations should also retain their same reverse designs as well. I think this would leave a couple good gaps for those who want Reagan on a Federal Reserve note. In other words, how about a Ronald Reagan $200 bill and a Theodore Roosevelt $2,000 bill, or vice-versa?

You could argue that it may be time to change some of the others as well. I personally believe he would have never gotten on a coin had he not been tragically killed though in fairness he also was robbed of some years to have an impact. That said I don't think removing him would be as difficult as say lincoln off the cent. You could argue though its time for a change for all of them and you'd get a lot of mixed opinions. I would like to see Jefferson off the nickel because it saddens me to see what they've done to him with the new design but that's me.

There is of course another option where you just redo or change the reverse like with the quarter.

Something to consider though in your efforts to get halfs circulating again a redisgn all together could prove beneficial to that cause. Kennedys have been engrained as coins to hoard for so long now its not likely going to change. A new half would give a fresh start with no illusions of find silver in bank rolls or having to fight the historical view of them.

My personal view on the half would be I'd love a special set to go out on and do think this milestone in the series would be as good of time as any to end it. I'm fine if they want to keep kennedy but would at least like a redesign for the reverse.

No, we do not.

I agree it probably is wishful thinking but nothing says they would have to be released early next year.
Optimism, for the win.

They won't eliminate the half dollar. As long at the mint makes money they'll keep minting them. And I hope they don't change it. I like the design as it is.

It's nice to just have to get three coins a year....P, D & S and then you're done unlike the 15 or so quarters and 15 dollar coins (12 Pres and 3 NA) every year. That's overkill.

i think there is some kind of rule or law stating that coins over 10 cents
in value must have a eagle on the reverse unless its a commemorative issue

just like the Franklin half dollars - it has a eagle on it... barely
with all the commemorative issues going on .... its seems that anything goes

Snowman is correct, the coins larger than the dime have to have an eagle on them unless the authorizing law specifies otherwise.

I'd love to see all our currency and coins get a makeover. The bills can keep the same people I guess, but the coins really need brand new faces. Just my opinion.

Bring back Liberty please and add some relief to the coins. Something has been bothering me lately about recent coins and how they feel so cheap....there's no design relief.

Conder101 and snowman24,

I am also aware that every coin denomination above to dime must have an eagle on the back, however, just like with the Prez and Sac dollars and all of the quarter series, they legislated the eagle off those coins, they could legislate the eagle off the half as well, but I wonder if thats only a temporary fix until the quarter and dollar's respective programs end. Also, I have always wondered, why don't the law make it so that the penny, nickel and dime must also have a type of eagle design on the reverse? Seeing an eagle, especially on the back of the penny would be interesting, just because its the only other colored coin than the GDs now (of course I know silver is a color as well, but you all know what I mean (-; )

When the quarter program ends the reverse design is mandated to return to a Washington crossing the Delaware image. When the Presidential dollars series ends it will continue as the Native American design. Both of these are mandated in the authorizing legislation.

Return to this design from which original design?

Washington crossing the Delaware is at least a change. Maybe they'll give Washington a new look too. I bet after so many years of looking to his right, he's got one heck of a stiff neck.

The high speed minting process for higher mintage numbers necessitated the lower relief.

Ah, the old "sacrifice quality for quantity" bit. Maybe we can get some technology that'll give us both?

If they would quit minting the cents, they would not have to!
