I just got a batch of coins back from NGC, and thought I'd challenge you with some interesting ones. This one I bought some time ago from a very reputable dealer who was retiring. 1808 is a tough issue; the mintage is reasonable, but the certified populations are low. I love the second 8 in the date: The die maker didn't have an actual "8", so he made one out of two letter O's. Care to guess what NGC gave it? (Yes, dies are rotated as shown.)

MS-62 BN I just see a touch of rub on the cheek and shoulder, but I still think it's MS coin. A beauty!

I will say it graded AU-50. I think there might be too much wear on the hair, cheek, shoulder, and wreath to much higher in the AU range but it appears to be nicer than a EF. It has very good eye appeal. Pretty coin!

I think it's EF45 but I like this one, maybe went as high as AU53? Love the rotation also.

I found this coin a very tricky one to grade. What at first appears as wear is a somewhat weak obverse strike, very typical for the date. The surfaces are very clean, with almost no marks except for an old, thin scratch over the bust. The toning is even and a nice medium chocolate brown, but there is not much luster (presumably due to the strike and die state). I could justify several AU grades. You guys were equally stumped, with predictions ranging from XF45 to MS62, without any clear consensus. The grade NGC chose is... ...which needless to say makes me very happy!

Of 217 in Heritage's sale archives for this issue, only 8 exceed this grade. I could easily rationalize AU50 for the obverse on detail alone, so if strike is to be considered AU55 does not grate on the psyche. And the eye appeal is off the charts.
