Out with the Old; 1938-D PCGS MS66 In with the New; I just picked this Jefferson up and thought that I would share. Thanks for your interest! 1939 was one of the transition years where there were a couple varieties available; 1939 reverse of 1938 1939 reverse of 1940 Just in case that you don't know or can see the diference here is an image from PCGS Coinfacts; Mainly the vertical line providing the "ends" of the steps. Very nice You have to have almost MS steps to see the difference, when looking for them VF will not do.

Both of those coins are lookers.
I had heard of the varieties before but as you have shown a good side by side picture for comparison makes it a lot easier.

Nice! But I'm lost. Why does it say 1940 reverse when the coin is a 1939?

In the intial thread, last image, there is a side by side picture of the "38" and "40" reverse. The 38 and 40 reverse dies were used in the production of 1939 Jefferson nickels. Here is a summarization of a nice article about the differences; http://gotnickels.com/jefferson-nic...verse-of-40/"1.Wavy Steps for 1938 vs Well Defined Steps for 1940 2.A vertical indentation to start & end the steps on the Reverse of 1940 3.The Reverse of 1940 has a thicker top step"
