I just started collecting coins about 2 weeks ago. I had a coffee can full of change, and I was going to wrap it all up, but before I did I decided to see if there were any valuable coins that I might stumble upon that I should keep. From that point I have been hooked lol. I never realized that there were so many key dates, varieties, and errors to look for, especially pennies. I searched and searched for a list of valuable coins that can still be found in circulation, but never could find something solid to go off of. I put my own list together and I think its pretty solid. I tried to list only modern coin dates, as I keep all wheat pennies, all nickels older than 1950, and all quarters and dimes older than 1965. I've gone through all of my pennies, quarters and nickels, and I'm about to start sorting through the dimes. I just cant seem to find a good list of the more modern dimes to look for.
My questions are,

What dimes from 1965-present are worth keeping? I was thinking of holding on to all 2009 dimes because I heard there wernt that many minted. Can anyone else list some more? I'm looking for errors, key dates, etc especially for the newer coins (1990-present).

What quarters from 1965-present are worth keeping? I have a small list that I look out for, and I examine all State Quarters for rotation errors etc. I've started holding onto some of the more scarce State Quarters that I've found in great condition, even if it takes selling a whole roll to get a decent premium.

My list of pennies to look for is pretty extensive, but are there any newer ones I should look for, like 2000-present? I know about the Wide AM variety for 98, 99, and 2000.

As far as nickels, I want to know what newer ones I should keep. For all these coins I have no trouble finding which ones are valuable when it comes to the really old ones, so I have all of those on the list already. I'm more concerned with the valuable ones that dont show up on a google search lol. also any coins I should keep to sell in bulk.

Sorry if this is confusing, I'm still new to coin hunting. If it helps, I can share my list and people can add to it or critique it.

Thanks!!

I keep all s mints, all 2009s, (including nickels and pennies), and strangely enough, I keep anything pre 1970. I also keep proofs or high end coins that are older. Also you can keep all pre 1982 pennies for copper melt value. I'm sure there are a few I am forgetting, but I hope this helps.

I don't think there are many recent key dates: if you just want to have fun collecting and already know about old varieties, silver and some errors, I'd just get a cheap folder and try to fill it with non-silvers.

Oh, but if you find a Canadian coin from 1970, that's a quite low mintage year so hang onto it!

i also have been keeping all 2009s, and any 's' mints I find(only found 1 so far lol.)
I was keeping copper pennies, until I realized it was illegal to melt them down.
and how do I tell if a coin is a proof coin or sms, etc? from what I've read they are very detailed, but I've found plenty of detailed coins and I doubt they were all proofs.

As far as a coin folder, as of right now I'm just looking for the rarer coins to make some profit, I dont have an interest in a personal collection. I could see this changing in the future though considering how fast I became interested in coin hunting.

Any suggestions for dimes to hold onto, particularly 2000-present? I'm going through my bag right now and finding alot of these.

to the forum and the hobby!

Something you might want to look at is numismedia.com. They are an online price guide which seems to be pretty good. The prices might help you determine which ones to keep.

thanks I will check that out. I just stumbled upon a thread that referenced ASA dimes and quarters, what are they? Also decided to start keeping ATB Quarters, anything else I should horde besides the scarce State Quarters? I mean pennies, nickels and dimes.

As far as dimes go, 1996W is a keeper, however I also keep clipped planchets, modern clad S-proofs, and modern silver S-proof dimes. Good luck.

I understand there may also be valuable unfound varieties.

when it comes to the 1982-p dime, I'm assuming the dime has no mint mark? I've found a 1982-d but I just rolled it because it had the mint mark.

Anyway, I've gone through all my change (about $150 dollars worth), and now I'm looking to start buying rolls from the bank. I've been using a crappy magnifying glass I got from cvs that has a 6x bifocal, but I ordered a 10x keychain loupe that I will have tomorrow. I still have a bag of maybe 50 misc coins that I want to double check with the 10x magnifier, because I think I see doubling/errors on them but the 6x magnification just doesn't show me quite enough to make a decision.

Tomorrow I plan on stopping by a bank to cash in 2 rolls of quarters, then going to another bank and purchasing a few rolls. I was thinking of getting 1 roll of quarters, 1 roll of dimes, 1 roll of nickels, and 6 rolls of pennies. any thoughts on this from the more experienced people?

You'll burn through just one roll of the larger denominations in no time. If you can afford the extra cost (and have the extra time), get a box of the coins. You'll have more to search through but you'll make far less trips to the bank back and forth.

I have to agree with Skyshark, I don't even leave home unless I can pick up say, $500-$1,500 in coin in one shot. The key to great finds is searching volume.
If you are searching only errors, smaller amounts can last you a lot longer.
I can search $1,000 in dimes in an hour, when I'm hunting silver.
