I recently sent in a batch of 10 coins to PCGS. I agreed with the grades on nearly all of them. On one, although I would've graded it differently, I couldn't really argue.

On this one, however, I am flummoxed. I would have graded it significantly higher. But then again, I am not well-versed in grading Barber coins.

I'd appreciate it if you could take a look and let me know how you'd grade it - and why.

BTW, it has very nice luster under the toning.

Lovely coin, XF45. I believe I'm seeing enough wear on the hair below the LIBERTY and on the eagle to keep it under AU. Lovely toning !

I will guess AU-58. The toning is making this particularly challenging to grade for me. The hair under liberty, the wingtips, and the eagle's head appear to have a slight bit of wear but from what I have seen on other coins, toning can sometimes create an illusion of wear. The coin appears lustrous enough for an AU but it could have graded somewhere in the vicinity of MS-62/63. Without having the coin in hand, I'm not feeling too confident with my guess. A great coin BTW!

nice deep toning, I really like it

i am going to agree that this is a held back EF45 coin. there is enough wear on the reverse shield, scroll to have held it under an AU grade.

what did they give it?

AU50/53 range to me. I can see where the EF crowd is too. Barber designs can be tough to grade, I see the high points in the hair above the forehead on your coin aren't fully struck and looks like some light wear. A very nice original looking piece Liz.

I'm in the Xf-45 camp. I think a couple of the stars are showing some wear as well. Stunning coin with Beautiful toning.

I'm less critical of PCGS now that you guys have all chimed in. It's pretty clear that this coin is a challenge to grade, given that your grades ranged from XF45 to MS64!

Although I see a very slightly flat strike, I don't see what I consider wear - but as was pointed out, the toning makes it very difficult to distinguish wear.

There is a lot of cartwheel mint luster under the toning.

I really felt that this coin was in the upper-AU/ lower-MS range. But given the strong XF45 opinions here, I think I am now happy that the experts at PCGS graded it...

I would have said at least AU55 to MS63. That is one beautiful coin. I don't see much wear either.

I think we got it wrong due to the toning and jpg compression of the photo, makes it look like scratches or wear where there isn't any. Should have paid more attention to your post about the underlying luster.

Super nice coin Liz! Thanks for sharing.
