Mt father has 2 gold dollars with JFK on the front and the Statue of Liberty on the back. They have the word TRIAL stamped small on the back. They are about the size of an Eisenhower dollar. Any ideas on what they could be? I will try to get a pic from my father in a few days but right now this is the best description I have. Thanks

I might be a fake, non legal tender coin as far as I'm concerned no coin like this was minted.

I can tell you this much- it is not a US coin or a coin from any other country. I suspect it is a fantasy Presidential dollar for JFK, what will eventually be the actual legal tender coin is not due to be released until 2015. The problem is that this thing appears to violate the Hobby Protection Act with its use of devices found on legal tender coinage- UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and DOLLAR. The HPA also decrees that all imitation numismatic items be clearly marked COPY, there is no provision for the usage of "TRIAL". However, the size of it may be a saving grace. I believe there is a provision in the HPA that allows for oversized replicas, I think the diameter has to be 2-3x that of the actual legal tender coin the replica is imitating. I guess the question now is how big is it

biokemist - perhaps it violates the act - but the JFK coin isn't an actual coin being produced - so not sure it actually does violate the law yet... if it isn't the same size as the current coins and isn't actually a replica of the current production mint coins - it would appear to me to be someone prototyping a theoretical coin especially with the "trial" clearly stamped on the reverse. My take is one of the "non mint" - "mints" trying to get an edge early.
