Good morning! I hope everyone is doing well. I've just purchased a Franklin half advertised and presented as: 1961 Franklin half dollar "Proof" Choice PF. The photo was immaculate. A beautiful mirrored proof. I've attached a photo that I just took of the coin and was wondering what the community thinks. I'm looking at this as a learning experience for myself, but need some opinions from others that have been doing this longer than me. Thanks, Terry McManus

I'm no expert by a long shot but, I would say that it has been cleaned harshly and not a Proof.

I'd say it IS a proof, but it has been destroyed by a harsh abrasive cleaning.

Technically, though, I'm thinking that the description is probably "correct", just misleading (tremendously). I've sent a message to the seller three days ago on this and they have not responded yet. A case of buyer beware here? If I take the coin and put the light just right, it matches what was shown on e-bay.

Whizzed or similarly cleaned coin. Too bad too. At least it's got some silver value. I'd be sending it back though unless you paid some ridiculously low amount for it.

Looks like someone tried to polish it up a little in an attempt to make it look better. There is no way it is "choice," Choice Proof should be PF-63. With all those hairlines it is clear it has been cleaned so I would return it as not as described. It sure didn't come from the mint like that. Did you purchase it on ebay or somewhere else?

Dragged behind a car at a race track. Testing a belt sander on coins. Wire wheel cleaning system.[ Regardless, a bit of the usual for ebay. Now only if the seller would take that back. Even then, who pays for the postage?

0000 steel wool. Does about the same thing. Cleaning powders or emery cloth too.

Sprayed with a can of black Krylon, scrubbed back with 0000 steel wool to give it that patina all the kids love these days...

I would call that AU details - harshly cleaned - net value is melt. You should be able to get your money back based on the misleading description and doctored photograph. If ebay, open a dispute after 48 hours if not resolved by the seller and remember to leave negative feedback after you receive a refund. There is no excuse for that attempt to deceive. Just my opinion.... Edit to add - tell us who the seller is so the name can go on my do not buy from list if not already there.

To me looks like someone used the wrong cleaning polish on the coin. I have seen coins like that before. But I'm not 100% sure. And it does look like a proof.

It definitely does not match "Choice" Proof. I'd open a case with ebay based on the sellers lack of response to your email. All communication with the seller should also be through ebay. If you open the case - then ebay will contact the seller - and if you get nothing from that they will refund your purchase.
