Now that my Newfoundland set is two coins from completion I'm attempting to balance the desire to stockpile key dates with my determination to finish the series and stay within budget. Thus I've decided I can live with just one example of the above-named coin. Pictured first is my PCGS F12, followed by a raw coin that doesn't look as bright in-hand as the images suggest. If you were building a set, which would you keep? How would you grade them according to Canadian standards? Thanks again!

Bottom coin. You can put that coin in a windowsill for a year and get back some natural toning, but you can't fix those scratches on the top coin...

I'd keep the top one.An eyeless Victoria is just far too distracting.

VG8 for the top coin.
G6 for the bottom one, much less appealing reverse.

The top one has more appeal for me.

I would say G6 for the top and G4 for the bottom. I'd be inclined to trade them both in for a VG-F. :-) It's a tough call but I'd probably go with bottom. Unless the scratches on the top one just don't appear as bad in hand as the picture makes them seem.

Looks like the PCGS F12 has the lead. I've got to disagree on the G4-G6 grades though; we've got braid and ear remnants here. See below one of my other 1873s in G4; the portrait is a silhouette and the reverse is faded. These are however not top-quality images I'm providing; the bottom images are from an old scanner. It would not surprise however if ICCS cross-graded the PCGS coin as VG.

A scanner never gives a good picture for a grade, too much light on the coin.

I would bet, the bottom coin is the better one and would grade VG

I would keep the top one for some reason.
