A number of years back (don't remember the date), one of the coins I submitted to ANACS was a 1814 Bust ½ Dollar with a strong Die Clash on the reverse.

It came back as a 1814 O-102a variety, and since I no longer had a Overton book (traded my Overton for a VAM catalog a few years earlier), I'm hoping someone here on CCF can advise me on what die clash letters are inside the shield on the reverse side. On the right side of the shield is a strong "LIBERTY" clash.

Below are three photos of the reverse, and should anyone have a overlay of this series to help me ID what the clash is inside the shield, please post a photo.

Thanks.

The examples that have come up at Heritage Auctions are just described as having the RT of LIBERTY within the shield, as well as the more complete LIBERTY to the right of the shield, without explaining how such a very offset extra die clash is supposed to have occurred.

Many Thanks,

I thought one of the letters was a "T" and could not make out the "R", and when trying to match the clash to the obverse, there were no letters in that position.

Now I'm curious if the reverse die received a clash from 2 different obv. dies, with one of the dies being offset ?

What I am seeing is TWO clashes inside the shield. The first one closer to the point of the shield looks like the bottom of an E and the next one appears to be the top of the T. So there are at least three clashes one outside the shield, another with LIBERTY closer to the center of the die and shifted slightly clockwise, and then a third clash with LIBERTY even closer to the center and again shifted clockwise.

I think what you're seeing as the bottom of an E, the Heritage people see as the middle of an R, lining up with the T as a single clash. They may be wrong, but Occam's Razor, the Principle of Parsimony, is in their favor (for a given set of circumstances, the simplest explanation is the most likely to be correct).

After looking at it again I could agree with it being the middle of an R. That would make just two clashes which would be more likely
