The 1916D Mercury dime is the penultimate coin and I WILL buy one someday. The question is... would you buy this one based on the information given?

The price of this one is below the value price and the best I've seem (too good to be true?). I see this and a few red flags and I have asked the seller for some additional information (just a few hours ago). WWYD (What would you do)?

Here's the description of the coin and the picture:

Hello. I sell my coin 1916-D Mercury dime PCGS XF-45. I am not a US coin dealer. I collect the russian coins. I sell my Mercury dime for $3500 (PCGS value $6700). I can send any pictures.

Would-You-Buy-This-1916-D-Mercury-Dime...

I'm going to communicate with the seller and get more information, but I'm wondering if you guys can understand some healthy skepticism.

I'd start by getting the pics and checking the stab number to see if things appear legit.
Your wise to not get your hopes up but you never know.
You might want to check with law enforcement to make sure it's not stolen at some point.

Upstate... thanks, in my excitement I didn't do the simple verification of the PCGS number. I did that and it did verify... it's got the correct info.

Yeah... looks like the site auto stripped the picture. I'll upload it to photobucket and repost tonight. The picture will show one side of the coin (in obverse) in a 1st generation PCGS slab.

bama where is he seller located? is this on the bay? do you have any level of buyer protection? just because he posts pics does not mean he has the coin no matter what he tells you and out of the country scams to nab $3500 from you does not mean he is getting caught and your getting easily refunded

tread carefully here

Dsfreeworld...

This is on an established coin site that's not a sponsor of this web site. I used their name in another post and it got censored, so I won't repeat it here. That site has no buyer protection.

The text of the sellers description sounds most effective in a Russian accent. There was nothing more to the description than what I reported in the thread starter. Since I started the thread, I see that the seller posted this ad in 2010 and hasn't logged onto the site since 2011... So I think it's a safe bet that he's not going to respond to my query.

See if there is some sort of escrow service or find a highly recognized coin dealer that is acceptable to both parties who can act as an impartial go between for the money and coin exchange.

Do you have or can the seller provide a picture of the reverse?
This is a $6000 coin in this grade and the fact that the seller is willing to take that large of a discount when clearly he/she had done some research to its value, is suspicious IMO. Second, the coin looks a little unusual. While it is hard to know for sure without closeups of the coin, the overall look(slightly lacking in details but may be lustrous) reminds of some chinese counterfeits. The fact the certification checks does not automatically mean it is good. There are counterfeit slabs that are known to use a certification number from a legit slab. Personally, I would pass.

That Cert # is known to be faked and pops up on ebay from time to time.

Run away.

There are a bunch of photos of different iterations up on CoinForgeryEbay: http://www.flickr.com/photos/coinfo...photostream/

Yikes!! Thanks guys. This one was too good to be true. I never got a response from the seller and that seems to be a very good thing. I'm going to send an email to the site owners and ask them to investigate and at least suspend the ad until this can be validated. I appreciate all the help!
