For all you copper hoarders, how do you handle the corrosion/verdigris issue . Does it spread throughout your stash? Also what is the best way to store them? .

Thanks in advance for your responses and suggestions.

The verdigris will spread with other coins its in contact with. If you have any of those get them away from the clean coins as soon as you can. You can keep them individually so they dont feed off each other but at the very least get them in their own pile.

Badthad here makes stuff called verdicare that gets rid of that. I've never used it so I cant speak to that personally but people seem to like it here.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that when you're hoarding copper, you aren't too terribly concerned about condition as it's probably already well circulated and you're saving it for some day when it's legal to melt. In which case, any verdigris or corrosion probably wouldn't mean much.

So...big glass jar? Carboy? 5-gallon Home Depot bucket? All of the above? Obviously you won't keep them out in the rain but your garage or someplace somewhat protected from the elements would be fine. I have several large glass jars that I keep my coppers in to keep the weight down. They stay in my office which is in a generally air conditioned house, which is to say that the humidity is almost always under 40%.

Totally different story if you're talking copper with numismatic value.

Verdigris is not much of a problem with the storage of SCRAP copper, but I would still separate any article the was affected by it. When it comes to bronze coins, this problem becomes more urgent to deal with.
For valuable copper or bronze coins, VerdiCare as a treatment coud be considered, depending on the value of the coin.

For my hoard of copper, 50 cal ammo cans. I'm not too worried about them, so the corroded ones go in as well.

I seperate the coins with verdigris and keep them in plastic sandwich bags. I try to keep all the copper coins
clean. Having time to do so and because I enjoy playing
with them, I seperate my copper by date and mint mark.
Currently they consist of 244 rolled coppers and many
dates started in platic tubes.

I have never bought a roll of pennies so what I have are
mostly from circulation and friends that save their cents
for me.

I can't see why you would want to infect good copper with
verdigris. It is ugly and slimy.

Just my 2 cents!!

More of a question for people that just store bulk coins. If you were collecting Copper coins, most would be in Albums, 2x2's, plastic tubes, etc. For just a piles of Copper coins with out any cares of those little things like dates, mint marks, etc., just put them in a jar, close the lid and don't worry.
