I just decided to purchase a set of proof 50 State Quarters on ebay. I figured if I could get full proof sets for a good price, then the better. Well, just a little while ago I did a search on the bay for a 2008 proof set and I saw a listing for a full 1999 to 2008 run of proof sets. The current bid was $102, but it was ending in 5 minutes. It gave me enough time to do some research on numismedia and add up the prices there, but not to look up each year's set's average purchase price, so I threw in a slightly higher bid. I figured there was not a snowball's chance that I would get it. Well I got it for $122 (my $110 bid plus $12 shipping). I'm just wondering if I did well? Usually I do meticulous research and figure out what the going prices are on each year's set and buy them one by one for "the right price." It usually takes losing out on lots of auctions until I get that great price. But that process takes soooo long. This time I just jumped on what I thought was the first good deal I came across. Just wondering if I overpaid. Thanks for any honest feedback.

are you talking full proof sets or quarters only? I have added prices from a "lowish" price online dealer, those full proof sets would total ~$178.15 + s/h

I was originally looking for the quarters only proof sets in OGP, but this listing was for the full proof sets (quarters, dimes, nicks, cents, halves & dollars). I actually made the bid thinking that there was no way I would win it, but the previous bid of $102 seemed too low, so I took a shot. Here's the link.I just need some corroboration that it wasn't a bad snap decision, so that when I tell my wife about it, I can show her this posting and say "Look, they think it was a good deal."

The 2008 proof set sells for 60 bucks a lot of places and routinely sells over 50 on ebay, another 1999-2008 set sold on ebay for 180 recently. You did well. You MAY have been able to get those a little cheaper it your wife never wanted to see you again as you spent hours and hours searching all ends of the internet for the best possible price on each one. You cant complain about an 11 dollar average for the set or if you assume you paid 50 for the 08 you averaged 8 dollars for the other sets.

They were selling a 1999-2009 quarters only proof sets on the T.V. coin show tonight for $199.99. Now those people are making a bad decision.
$12.00 per set is pretty good to me.

Thanks for the feedback guys. It looks like I didn't do badly. I could have done better, but finally a decision I've made about proofs finally paid out for once.
I have a horrible track record regarding proof sets lately. I haven't bought a proof set since the '80s, but when my kids were born in 2008 and 2010 I decided to buy silver proof sets for them. I want to make sure they have a proof set for each year of their life. The other years (2009, 2011 and 2012) I bought regular proof sets for each of them. Well, as you can see from the numbers below (from numismedia as a reference) I haven't been making the best decisions.
Yr Clad Silver 2008 85 66 2009 26 73 2010 76 69 2011 41 71 2012 81 138
So as you can see, 5 years running I have not picked a winner. I guarantee in 2013 neither will go up in value because I plan to buy two of each and dump the ones that go up in value less.
