I'm going to guess Hong Kong since they were under British rule until 15 years ago.

Zero for 3 Cheezyfryes

OK, here's my last clue for today, and it may prove to be a very big clue:

To get this answer, the vast majority of the members here will have to do no research at all. None.

I'll check in tomorrow morning at around 10:30 a.m. Eastern Time to see if anyone has the answer yet. If not, I will have another major clue ready.

I'll go with the 2003 Palau 1 dollar coin. The lady wading in the ocean is stepping in the water, and the crab on the coin is in the water (also the crab is a reference to, well, a crab). The Akoi-Koi bar is a fancy modern bar in Palau. Wishing on the wrong star could be an obvious reference to the star on the coin, or the fact that in the Southern Hemisphere the predictable and commonly called-upon North Star is not visible so traditionally, sailors used the Southern Cross to navigate (and probably wish to see to guide them). The pigeon being an eagle may be a reference to the island being a self-running republic, but having a compact of free association with the United States (represented by the eagle). Last but not least, the reference of "vast" is the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean, where Palau is located. I kind of disregarded your initial clues, but by the time I typed all this, I didn't care anymore, so now everyone has to read it. If this doesn't get me close, I'm just gonna give up.

skyshark, if you're not correct then you and I are both good at reading into clues that aren't really there. That Palau coin is a great guess!

I actually kind of want the Palau coin now. If it's not the right answer, I may try to find one to add to my collection.

No sorry Skyshark, it has nothing to do with Palau. Palau does have some beautiful coins though.

The words in the riddle are not important.

Before I write up a lengthy explanation, is it a Sacagawea dollar?

Now that you gave the answer, it's obvious that the first and last letters of your poem spelled out dime merc. Unless that's an amazing coincidence as well.

Don't step in the water, for the crabs have been known to swarm
Envision the future and you'll be suprised to see a koi
More than one have fallen victim to wishing upon the wrong star
Come closer and you just may find that this pigeon is actually an eagle

D M
E I
M R
C E

I think CheezyFries' answer was still better and should at least get an honorable mention.
