Sunday was my birthday and there was a coin show, so I took some of my birthday money and headed off to the show. Because it was my birthday, and you get to do whatever you want on your birthday, when I got home I had a little coin show and I made my family act interested as I showed them my new additions to my collection:
My new BU pennies that I won in a contest here on CC (thanks chrycopaul!),
A long awaited for 1935 commemorative dollar,
A 1967 bunny nickle,
A 1971 commem dollar,
Two other voyager dollars.
I also picked up :
1973D
Ike dollar,
A 1936 five cent and a 1936 ten cent coin from Brittish East Africa.
(My only coins with Edward VIII.)
My family did a good job acting like there was something interesting on the table.
The best part of the day, however, was before I left, when my 8 year old daughter asked if she could go with me. At first, I was hesitant because I wanted to enjoy myself without dealing with a kid.
Before we left I gave her the third degree - I told her that there would be no whinning, no crying, and we would be gone for a long time. She said that was fine.
As I always do, I told her that if she was well behaived, she would get to pick out two coins from a box. Usually, I don't have to worry about spending money on this, because by the time I'm ready to leave, they've driven me insane.
As we went through the show, I realized that she was not only well behaived, she was actually interested in the coins. Instead of "When can we leave?" "I'm hungry!" "How much longer?" "I'm bored!" I was having to deal with "Come look at this!" "What is that?" "Why are these like this?" "Look how big that one is!" "What country is this from?" "Why do you like that one?"
It was great!
Before we left, she went and spent a few minutes looking through a box of tokens and she picked two of them out.
When we got home the first thing she did was ask me if she could put them in a book like mine.
They were too large for any 2x2's that I have, but I gave her a 20 pocket page and a binder. She wrote her name on it and asked if she could put it on the my shelf with my other binders.
She ran off to her room and came back with a few tokens she had picked up at church and at school. She put them in the page also. After I did my little show for my family, she ran and got her book and brought it out to show off, too.
Now, who knows how long she will be interested, but it was fun to spend time with her and share an interest with her.
