It's a US Trade dollar which has been handcarved, post-mint, into what's called a "Love Token," and inserted into a piece of jewelery as noted by the marks on the obverse. You see Love Tokens all the time, but I think this is the first I've seen made from a Dollar. Somebody must have really liked someone; that was nearly a day's wages then.

Looks to be a genuine Trade dollar that was fashioned into a love token. Which was common practice during the later 19th century.

cool! the lettering has a very Celtic beast feel to it (ala "Book of Kells").

How long have you had it?

Inherent to a love token is the intertwining of two initials, for obvious reasons. That tends to unintentionally mimic the style of Celtic-style lettering of medieval illuminated manuscripts.

Oh wow! That is so neat! I've never heard of that before! What was already one of my favorite coins is now even more interesting! Thanks so much guys for the speedy response! Now just curious does that depreciate the coin? Or is there a lot of people who collect them?

A specialist in Love Tokens, given the more rarely encountered larger denominations, might be willing to offer a substantial premium.
I have three dimes and I have seen quarters, but nothing larger.
It depreciates the coin as a collectors' coin. But it is worth more than just melt.

you could do well selling that to a love token collector. If you want to consign it and get cash upfront say the word
