Today I found an 1899 nickel while roll hunting. I don't get it. Even if you're not a coin collector, wouldn't you still hang onto that if you found it? I'm glad no one did, but I'm still shocked. Do you think other people don't care of do these get into circulation on accident?

Hey thats the oldest one I've found too! A lot of people don't notice. Some people don't care. Two possibilities. 1. It's been in circlulation for a very long time, and no one noticed it. 2. (More likely) Someone cashed in a jar or cache of coins that had been sitting around for a very long time and that had the nickel in it. And you got lucky. Great find! You should post it in the nickel searching thread, and put some pictures as well.

Theres so many ways for coins like that to get out of a collection or just be left in circulation, my guess is that the person rolling the nickels wasn't looking or paying attention and it found its way into a roll.

There is a third way, every once in a while I'll throw a "special" penny or nickel into circulation. I do it only in rolls that are returned to the bank though.

Hopefully it's not in circulation because someone broke into someone's house and took their collection to the bank or a Coinstar machine.

Or perhaps someone's youngster wanted some ice cream and took some "change" off daddy's desk.

I have often wondered that same thing. CLEARLY your Liberty nickel/Buffalo/Walker/Franklin/Morgan... Etc.. is worth more than face.. Even if you are completely clueless you should be able to see that. Why anyone would ever let those go for face baffles me. No cmplaints though.. if there werent people like that out there I would never find any!

A few years ago I had a fellow worker say they just got a Canadian nickel from a customer, and it was in the register if I wanted it. I guess they mistook Liberty for the Queen's effigy, b/c it was an 1898 V nickel. I let them know what it really was. They still did not care. Details are not something the average person sees anymore.

jbuck - I am definitely keeping it. My goal of my collection is to enjoy the history behind the coins and pass them down to my sons if they too are interested. That's way better to me than making a couple bucks on it.

Put it in a 2x2 with the place and date you found it. Nice to build out the history behind those circ finds.

I've lost a few of my older coins to my kids. Thankfully, most if it was Lincoln Memorial Cents, or circulated Kennedy halves...
