Did all 1973 PL Double Dollar sets come with lb quarters for sure anyone know?
Reason I ask is colonial acres has a 1973 Set for sale that says it's never been open so how do you know it's a LB?
BTW I'm looking for one soon so that's why I'm asking.

No...Most came with the small bust. I have one also with the large bust.
Im not sure how they would know if its never been opened....I opened mine and turned the quarter around

The case is really easy to open and have a peak. That being said, I purchased a set from a coin shop for $23 and was surprised to find it was a LB, but I would not expect that to be the norm, as the quarter alone usually sells for $200.

How would you all "quantify" the rarity of the 73 PL Large Bust ...to the 73 Specimen Large Bust 25 c.(ie: Double Dollar set)..?
Are all 73 Double Dollar sets ...actually Specimen sets..? ..and therefor should not be mixed up with PL sets..?

Before 1981, the double dollar sets are "Prestige Sets" and yes they are Specimen. I'm not sure if anyone really knows the mintages of the large bust...it is thought that it doesn't exceed 10000

Thanks rmc
How do you think that the PL LB and SP LB ..both came to exist. I would think that we are talking about 2 different runs with different dies and matrix.
The Charlton shows both and a higher value on the SP LB. So, I'm guessing that we see the PL more often as probably more were out there,.. and the discussion here is often on the PL only.

I believe they started making all grades of 1973's with the 1972 die's but soon switched to the new die which has the small bust and greater detail.

Why do we say they were struck with '72 dies rather than '74 dies?

 Because in 1973 the 1974 die's didn't exist yet....

Some '74 dies probably did exist, they were the same obverse dies as '72.

Fair enough and that may be true, but we are talking about a 1973 quarter....generally we refer back as opposed to the future. So are you saying that the small bust die was only used in 73?

Well I assume they used the older, less detailed 72 die's to make the 73's...I would think the new 74 die's would have been of better quality ... I don't know but it just makes sense to me

We say '72 because this variety was discovered well before the end of production of '73.
