I wasn't a coin collector back in 2011 when I stumbled across this site and read about the then upcoming 25th Anniversary Silver Eagle sets. The enthusiasm rubbed off on me, and I ended up getting braving the mint traffic that morning to get my order in.

One of my sets arrived with a rattle that proved to be the S mark coin sliding all around unprotected below the holding tray. The weird part is that it wasn't due to a loose air tite, because the air tite was also in the box and totally sealed. I tried to open the air tite but couldn't figure it out and ended up putting the set away in my closet without putting the coin in the capsule.

I was rooting around the corners of the closet today and came back across it. I decided to try the air tite again but never made it that far. When I opened the box, I discovered that my S mark looks like a graffiti artist stumbled across it...the obverse and reverse are violet, with half the edge leaning blue and half the edge leaning red :(

I really love the look of these sets, but now I have a crazy one...is the coin ruined or is there some way to save it? These sets sure weren't cheap and I hate to think I've got a worthless one now. And how the heck do you open a sealed air tite? I can only think of using a butter knife or something to try to pry it open, but that would gouge up the plastic. Please help!

As far as the coin toning its hit or miss with collectors if they like it. Some people like it some dont. Though those that do usually pay more for a nicely toned coin than a blast white one. Its only ruined if you dont like it, but even if you dont it still has resale value as opposed to a scratch up or cleaned coin that is actually ruined.

For opening the airtite there should be a seem on it near the top or bottom. You just need to get something in there and run it all the way around to loosen it up. A fingernail, exacto knife, anything small enough to actually get between it should work.

Thanks for the advice...I'm going to find something small and see if I can pop that air tite open! I liked how the coin looked before...not really digging its new face too much, especially since all its siblings are in their capsules looking so shiny and new.

This is what it looks like...there are a couple acne spots on the back where it looks silver but the rest is all crazy.

Sorry if I shouldn't link...I tried to use the image upload but it said it was too big and then the image optimizer thing didn't even show up when I clicked that link (though the instructions did fors ome reason).

Im not a fan of toning myself but I'm sure theres people that would be interested in that if you wanted to find a replacement for it.

Those sets arent to hard to find with all the ones that were bought to be resold if you just wanted to sell that and get a new one.

Could always give it a chance and see if it grows on you too

You likely can pick one of these exact coins up on ebay. You also could try to sell yours there and emphasize the toning.

that's cool toning for sure! Nothing to be worried about, IMO.

Somebody will like the toning, believe me. It doesn't sound like the ugly kind at all. You should post a pic when you get it out of the capsule. Using a small flat blades knife should do the trick of prying the Mint supplied capsule. If you put the coin inside a genuine Air-Tite capsule either the ring variety or the direct fit will best protect from additional toning. I have silver eagles from '87 & '88 as white as the day they were minted inside Air-Tites.

Thanks for all the opinions and knowledge, everyone. My heart about stopped when I saw the violet toning, so it's good to know it's not totally ruined. After doing some "toning" research, I'm just confused how it happened so fast. Maybe all the varnish/paint fumes the mint included inside those pretty blue boxes are the reason? Bizy, there are a couple links to the coin in my second post, though I had to use a cell phone, so you can't really see the blue and red variations that well.

I tried to pry the mint capsule open with a thin blade but scuffed it up. Maybe it shipped outside of the capsule because the mint couldn't figure out how to open it either! I'm keeping this set for a while, so I'll give it a little while to see if the toning grows on me. If not, the ebay route might be a good way to get the cash for a swap out.

@aGround: I am actually jealous! I saw the pictures in your earlier post, that is 'natural' toning for sure, there isn't the wild iridescence seen in the oven baked ones. I'd keep it or look for a dealer that specializes in 'naturally' toned coins, there are buyers that will pay a premium for such a coin. It might have been also heat/humidity in addition to paint fumes. It is great looking toning, a real conversation piece.

I'm not a big fan of toned coins, but that one is very nice. You won't have any problems if you wante to sell that on ebay. Good luck.

I like the toning.

I guess you could always set up a coin toning business with your "magic mint box" that produced that great toner.

Haha! "Magic mint box" has a nice ring to it! If you see a 25th Anniversary box on ebay listed like that some years in the future, bid with confidence :P I have a Morgan silver dollar I bought a while back. Should I put it in the box and see what happens? The varnish smell is really weak now though since the box has been sitting open over night.

Seeing a coin change and grow old has kind of re-sparked my interest in silver and coins in general. I think I've become at least a nominal collector by virtue of my experience with this set.
