Sent it to ICCS and do not rush to sell it.

There are only a few Canadian 1859 brass cents out there and all are in low or mid grades,... and they are selling for $1000's of dollars...if and when they ever come up for sale...so....

Don't be in a rush to sell this very rare piece....and all dealers will make a pitch to you ..for this piece...My 2c

Devlec, it is not a brass 1859, it is a 1858 with coinage orientation.

I am not sure of the number made. I have only found mention of it once. I am guessing not too many, but that is purely speculation.

I'm to new to paste a link, so Google this -
Coinscanada.com + 1 cent 1858 values of circulating coins
With any luck, after the coin is professionally cleaned a Double 5 will appear.

*UPDATE*
The coin dealer I took the penny to had an "expert" on Canadian currency look at the coin. His opinion is that the condition hurts the value, and it is not worth the cost to have it authenticated/graded. He put a price of a few hundred dollars on it. They never made an offer to purchase the coin, so I don't think they are trying to cheat me. Should I get a second opinion on the value, or just put the coin away to be passed on to one of my children? BTW, thanks to everyone for your interest and input.

I say get it graded anyways, because at the worst it costs you $40.

I don't think the dealer was giving you bad advice, but he may not be as informed as he should be on the matter.

Clearly the coin is compromised. However it is a very scarce variety, as is the 1859 brass cent.

I suspect that the value is in the worst case as the dealer suggested. However, with rare varieties the value would depend on who the buyer is.

If I were you, I would not leave this to the kids unless you were really sure that they care about coins. Otherwise they are more than likely to sooner or later sell the coins to a dealer that takes advantage of their lack of knowledge.

If I were you I would get it certified (or restored and certified by NGC) and then I would submit the coin to a reputable auction house that specializes in Canadian coins. There are a number of good auctioneers...Geoffrey Bell, Chuck Moore to name a couple. I think you will get a lot more than the dealer suggested.

Its a great find and you should take your time with this coin. These types of coins show up once in a blue moon. The guy said couple hundred dollars but at auction could go into the 1000s if the right buyers are interested.

Good luck!

This is a very rare coin...with only 2 others known...I know that I'm repeating myself here but...

Have it graded by ICCS as they are 'by far' the best, and most respected and knowledgeable experts in Canadian coins.

This coin will always sell in the $1000.00"s and not $100's.

Do not sell it too quickly or you will lose a bundle...

Thank you for your prompt responses. I think I will have it sent out to be graded/authenticated. I will keep everyone updated as to the progress. Thanks again.

I'm sure that the certifier will check "edge on" and make sure that no one worked with 2 old vicky coins and polished them down and then married them together. I did that once many years ago with a pair of older nickles.

I wanted to win the coin toss ...."for sure"...guaranteed...
