Anyone have any idea what this dent is on this Indian head? Is it some sort of stamp?

Nothing on the reverse. No marks or impressions. It looks like there is something under the dent though.

Yeah, that is a lamination error. What you are seeing are the letters from the legend, at the tail end of AMERICA. I have a very intense lamination error on ebay right now, where 1/3 of the coin looks like this. Just click the icon next to my name, if you want to check it out.

Cheers.

Is the dent the result of a mint error or is it just damage? I see what you mean though, AMERICA goes down and threw that dent. I guess nobody caught that on ebay, I listed it as damage and priced it half of the G price with no takers. Does this lamination error decrease or increase the value of it?

buddy16cat,

Well, it is more of a production or planchet error. It isn't a strike error or damage. The planchet wasn't formed correctly during production, and had a peel. It was struck by the mint press, and the peel fell off the coin after it was struck. Here are pics of the coin I have on auction now. It is awesome... probably will regret getting rid of it.

Okay, so the dent at 5 o'clock is a peel, correct?

What I am wondering does the error on the coin add to the value of the coin or is it just worth the value of the coin?

buddy16cat,

I wouldn't expect a premium on your coin. In fact, the coin I showed above has only 1 day left at auction and has a bid of a whopping $6.05. BOOOOO!

But it won't detract from the value will it since it isn't damage after all? At first I thought it was damage and would detract from the Numismedia value of $41 for that year. Your auction may get higher during the last 4 hours. Many times people bid when the auction is about to end.

Not to highjack this thread, but is anyone else here bidding on Drsandmans IHC from above. Id rather not get into a bidding war with a fellow CCF Member. But ya know, stuff happens. ;-)
