Recently I posted a question about a 2005 £5 coin sold as having a matt proof finish. As it wasn't in my coin catalogue and the seller was offering several other matt proof coins, also not in the book I contacted the Mint. They didn't reply. Nor did Spink or the BNTA. The only reply I got was from Marz in this forum. The Mint issues more and more coins, so many that my book says it has 'attempted' to list them all. Having read posts about faked undated 20p's and £2 coins with swapped centres counterfeiters are obviously taking advantage of the situation.
In my ignorance I thought that my query to the mint about the matt proof would get a reply confirming that it was genuine or asking for more information so they could check it out - isn't faking coins still a criminal offence? But instead - nothing.
So can collectors trust any new variations or new issues with mint errors? Doesn't anyone take any interest in what coins are being faked except collectors?

It is strange that none of those sent you a reply, if you are really worried about your coin then there are people at the British Museum that are more than willing to help, as long as you give them all the info you have, pictures, diameters, weight, etc. oh, and send them a pre paid way to get info back to you. Did you post pictures? I can't recall.

No, I didn't post photos, I still haven't got it right yet. I'm not really worried about the coin, I've accepted that I bought a fake. Perhaps, someday, a collector of fakes will be interested in it. Thanks for suggesting the British Museum.

From an interest point of view I would consider taking it off your hands, pictures pending of course.

I have noticed the RM have been ignoring comments and requests from members the last month or so.

When I say they did not reply I should have said that they did not give me an answer. RM said that they would pass my message to the relevant department then nothing. The BNTA replied saying they could not value or verify coins and refered me to a list of members who might help, although I didn't ask for a valuation. Spink didn't reply. Due to my continuing problems taking photos of coins I can only suggest that you do a search on ebay for "proof matt finish 1980 UK 25 new pence". The seller still had several matt proofs listed yesterday. I still think the mint should be a bit more concerned about fakes, if these are, in fact fakes.

No Matt proof issued for that coin year type never seen any and I have been full time dealer for over 35 years in UK. looks like a bleach job to me (silver goes grey when dipped in bleach) and since this looks cupro nickel it can only come from a proof set.

To be honest I would never buy from a seller with so much private feedback, then all of a sudden he comes across loads of cupro nickel matt (matte) proof coins (as the old saying goes) fools with money are easily parted. He even states only one on ebay (well hes the only one making them) I am surprised that any one can fall for this type of rubbish and leave positive feedback. yours michael

Thanks for your reply Michael and the benefit of your years of experience. This is why I have joined CCF. In ten years of collecting, buying mail order from established and reputable dealers, I have never seen a matt proof. Nor have I seen a bleach job. Having been fooled this time I will be more cautious in future. At least by raising this here other unwary buyers with little knowledge of fakers tricks will have been alerted. As I say in my other post the Mint doesn't seem concerned. As for leaving positive feedback when the seller quotes a Krause number and mintage, the coin looks good and arrives promptly etc what else can you do? I will take this up with ebay but after reporting another seller, all of whose auctions are private, who is still selling will anything happen? Thanks again, Dave.

Re Reporting should always report any seller who is misleading the buyer.
Re Coin its been altered so should be returned for full refund and I would not leave pos fb for any seller who sells altered items.
Get yourself a copy of Coin News UK coin mag (WH Smith) lots of dealers in there so you can shop around even my web site listed in mag (be it only a small ad)

From memory the 80 and 81 crowns were only issued in silver proof, not copper-nickel proof - they were not in the proof sets - so I think these "matt proofs" the seller has are likely to be just plain UNC coins in copper-nickel that have been dipped.
