Original toning and stacked in a pill jar with each year following for all of it's many decades,. and directly from the bank.. Would PCGS consider this toning a plus for this piece?

This is the 'grading forum' that asks us "to submit our coins to test our graders".. and only one has ...............

Not up to par with your usual photos.Difficult to determine both grade and eye appeal. MS64 in both cases?

Thanks to both of you for taking a shot... I'll try better next time. Those pics were ~1/2 sec shutter speed and F 13 to increase the dept of field. Dark coins like this one are next to impossible to get perfect.

The eye appeal is simply not there for a PCGS MS-66 grade. For me, it is not even close. There are fine rub marks (possibly shelf rub) on the high points of the crown, the King's high cheekbone, ends of the moustache and ribbon on shoulder. The shoulder of the indian on the reverse also shows this. I suspect this coin is closer to AU-58.

Quote: The shoulder of the indian on the reverse also shows this. I think it could be the way the pic was taken or light strike on the reverse. Quote: stacked in a pill jar. Shouldn't be circulated too much.

I am also struggling to grade this coin in MS ... I do not see any lustre, some wear/rubbing probably from being in the pill jar, hard to tell the toning from pics. Maybe pics do not give justice to the coin. All that said AU-58 with a stretch MS-60.

You're right.. It went from the bank to the jar with each year added to the previous.
Luckily, there were no heavy hits to each other as the 40's went in. That's how I found my 45, 46, 47 Pointed "Dot" etc.... ...in the same pill jar.
The fields are perfect on that 35 ,..so it will never rate in the AU grade..
I'm going to try and get the perfect and sharpest pics possible as the darker coins are the hardest to get right.

I've got another nice dark piece to put out here in the 50c variety.
I'll work on these pics and hope to see your grading differences here.
It's so easy to grade bright frosty big pieces. You check the high spots and count the bag marks,...if any..

Some weakness on the obverse. I don't think it's wear on the coin.Could be absence of toning due to the way the coin was stored.
The pics of your 1886 and 1902h were superlative at showing the eye-appeal of those coins. The pics of this coin don't reveal any wow factor.

I have seen and own many coins that have perfect fields yet are only AU 55-58 coins. I agree with SPP. AU 55-58.

This is the best that I'm able to give you with the 2 sheets of plastic and the very dark toning. It's graded by ICCS in the 90's at MS 62. nicklesguy...I would love to see a few of your AU 55 coins with "perfect fields",...or are you only talking about nickel coins here..? My taking on About Uncirculated coins (AU),..means that the coin has had some coin to coin contact with mixed coins and then a touch of wear on the highest spots and then it was 'soon' removed from circulation..

Better than MS62. Won't make MS65 in either holder. Not worth resubmitting as you won't recover much more than the cost of the grading unless it comes back as 65.
