hey . I recently purchased a set of Canadian large cents from ebay 1858 - 1920 including 91 sdll & 1907 h
i paid $250
collection came and every coin except 3 were cleaned, the 3 that weren't cleaned are corroded, he listed the 1858 as f-12,its actually maybe g+ cleaned, the 1891 sdll is dented bent and cleaned, there is not 1 nice undamaged coin in the set,
i contacted seller , he told me he never really looked at the coins just bought them from an estate and listed them./
but said I could return them, but it already cost me $15 to have it shipped to me and I would guess cost another $30 to ship back as canadian shipping costs more,
i suggested a partial refund and the seller is asking how much this is a quote of what he said :

"Partial refund - how much are you asking for?

This is dissappointing as I pd. $260.00 for the set. "

how much should I ask for? I dont think I should loose $45 in shiping charges because this guy didnt look at these coins or put in his description the quality

i dont really want to get nasty with this guy yet as so far it seems like he might try to fix it but I dont think it should cost me anything if I have to return it, or the discount should be significant to recoup the loss of such a horrible set

How were the pictures in the listing? Were they poor and blurry? I avoid auctions without clear closeup pictures. That way, you have a pretty good idea what you are buying?

Sorry this happened to you. Sounds similar to a buy I made on E-bay when I first got started collecting, however, once bit, twice shy.
>1-cheeck the seller's Feedback? Do they have negative's over the same matter from other buyers?
>2-check the seller's refund policy? Do they offer full refund or no refund.
>3-worst case scenario, if all you are out is the shipping cost, take the hit, call it a lesson learned and settle for the refund minus the shipping costs!
>4-tell the seller you will file a Paypal grievance over the matter and see what they say, never know? (a mild threat here and there comes in handy once in a while!)

If the coins are as bad as you say they are, then basically you just have a bunch of junk for $250.00. If he is willing to take the coins back I would return them and pay the shipping. Unfortunately it is a costly lesson learned. I also would never buy from a seller if they don't accept returns. Sorry this happened to you.

I would get the refund and accept the shipping cost as part of the expense of participating in the hobby. In my experience with ebay sometimes you just can't tell from the photos, and sellers do not always have the knowledge or the motivation to provide an honest assessment when the photos are poor.

I have returned twenty or so coins in the years since I have been buying on ebay and it does add up, but somewhere along the way you will make it up with other coins.

Be careful that by "partial refund" he isn't thinking you keep the coins and he gives you part of your money back - unless that is what you want. It sounds like you are not happy at all with the set and so I would send them back. Ask him to refund original shipping but I think I would cover return shipping as that's just the standard deal on ebay. Just be glad he's being reasonable on the return.

Some very good points have been made. Always check sellers feedback and if the pictures or description are not clear, don't be afraid to ask questions and even ask the seller to send you better quality pictures. It's one thing if it's a single coin for a few dollars, but if you are spending $250 you want to do your homework.

As a seller on ebay myself, I stand behind my coins 110% and always offer a full refund if the buyer is not happy with their purchase.

I hope it all works out for you.

If that is the one, and I bet it is, you can easily tell by the pictures that some have enviro damage.

yes that was the auction. I do buy collections with bad pictures as I have been really lucky with 1884 obv 1's high grade victorias , one collection I bought was almost all au - unc,,, yes some of the coins look cleaned but alot of people dont take very good pics of coins so you cant really judge by that, the fact that he has over 2100 100% positive feedback and he sells a lot of coins made me feel safe as he never even mentioned any problems,

Buyers protection! Ask for full refund and if he refuses open a case and you will win, make sure when you return that it goes back its signature required delivery. I sold a coin and my listing says not return and judge grade for yourself and the buyer still returned the coin, I did not even fight because I know the buyer always wins, return it ASAP!

What should you do? Recover as much as you can from an errant purchase. No one should buy coins based on the pictures the seller put forward in this auction. Always demand to see both sides of a coin when paying what you put up.

yes I know that the buyer always wins, I think it depends on how low he will go on a partial refund, I can still sell cleaned coins (listed as such) I just wont get as much as uncleaned. what do you all think would be a fair partial refund? if I decide to go this route(then wouldnt get burned with another shipping charge either)obviously if he doesn't go low enough then I will return it.
i just want to be fair to both of us I would like to end this on a good vibe!

His auction states "no returns accepted". I would avoid sellers that have this when you spend good money.
