Wow! Look at all the bids! Interesting coin to say the least. How did this get by "quality control?" LOL

I think this guy is quality control with a clear exit route through the back door.

I'm very interested to understand how an Ike dollar could be struck by a Quarter Planchette...? I have to suspect this was intentional...

I'd assume a quarter planchet got stuck to the Ike planchet (note: if I worked at the planchet factory, I would do this at least once on purpose, which is why I don't work at the planchet factory) and they were struck together, but then the quarter got unstuck and the result was this beauty. Maybe one day, we'll find the opposing "quarter only struck on one side with Eisenhower design" and the two errors will meet at last.

Rarity level for these from my book reference is between 1 and 1000 in existence.

The more I ponder this error, the more I suspect this as a "forced"error...

BamaBlue : Fair comment. Ex mint. Bit like the 1913 'V' Nickel. I have a deliberately contrived 'coin' from The Royal Mint, (not as rare as the 'V' nickel, though).

Planchets get mixed. It DOES happen, and not on purpose. No reason to think this was on purpose IMO. Case of stuff happens.

I have just never understood error collecting but to each his own! I am quite certain much of what I do in life wouldn't make sense to many people!

Very interesting. Too much money for me though. Quote: edit: oops, mods, would you please stick this in the error coins sub-forum? Thanks. Fixed.

One would be surprised by how many such errors come up for auction. There's usually a couple from different denominations struck through cents, dimes, quarters, washers, etc. I'm not sure how rare this specific type, Ike struck through quarter, is, but it might be more rare than other combinations. And I agree that this wasn't a helped error. Planchets get mixed up all the time, (at least they used to). There are certainly stranger, and more likely candidates for the 'helped' designation.

To add, there isn't a way to tell with complete certainty that it was actually struck through a quarter planchet until the matching coin is located. It could have been struck through a different planchet or some machine part, although quarter planchet is probably likely.
