I was browsing the latest catalog and noticed that the Creek Nation is listed. They don't have any information in the blurb about the country, but I found it odd that they are listed. I've seen other coins put out by tribes (e.g. the Los Coyotes Tribe) but I don't see them listed. Not sure what I think about this.

You're correct; on the NGC database pages, Creek Nation coins are given regular "KM" numbers, not the "X" numbers usually given to diplomatically-challenged coins. That means Krause considers them to be "normal coins".

I suspect that it's either an oversight, or that Creek Nation has vigilant lawyers, ready to pounce on Krause Publications if they dare try to classify them as a non-existent or irregular country. You'd probably have to contact Krause to find out which is the case.

Elsewhere we asked Tom Michael (Krause publications) about this a while ago - this was his reply,

Boy...I'd rather not step into this one, but since the mess is in my backyard, I guess I'll toss in a comment.
To paraphrase a friend, "strange times have come to numismatics and our 1960's attitudes may have to be revamped."
Belarus coins look like medals, but have legal tender status. Palau issues coins with scents that come out when the coin is warmed by your hands. Congo has clear acrylic coins. Cook Islands releases pop-up coins with gold plated inserts which stand up from the silver base. All of these items are coins. They do not circulate, but are designated as legale tender. NCLT items have been in our hobby for years. Those who collect circulating coins don't like them, mints who produce them enjoy the profit and seek contacts from tiny little places who have the right to issues coins, but no means or need for them.

The Creek and Shawnee Nations have the right to issue coins. They release silver and gold legal tender coins, which do not circulate, much like all other nations are doing.

Fantasy coins belong in UWC, no question. Legal tender coins from sovereign nations belong in the SCWC, even if they are NCLT, even if they are novelty items. It's a criteria we have to abide by to maintain an orderly system. We don't have to like it, but we do have to adjust to it.

The one thing that puzzles me is, that while the Creek Nation may be recognized by the federal government, they don't have a reservation where these things could circulate in. While the nation may say they are legal tender, there literally is no place in the world where you can spend them.

I am much more ready to accept the Tribes coins as 'real' coins than I am going to accept scented coins or pop-up coins. I do have some sympathies with the Lakota Tribes attempt to create a currency that is at least partially backed by precious metals. The Los Coyotes coins are legal tender on the reservation, but as you pay more for them than face value I doubt many people are going to use them, and even if they do use them the business owner makes a profit. I suppose if the idea catches on they will have to move all the tribes to internal dependent nations of the United States or something similar, like they did with Indian Princely States.

I can see coins that can circulate on a reservation as legal tender as being "real", but the Creek Nation doesn't even have a reservation to circulate the coins on lol

You are right, the Creek Nation doesn't have a reservation, it only has a "Tribal Jurisdictional Areas." What ever that means, best I can gather is that they used to have a reservation.
