Going through a bag of about 300 Canadian nickels last night I found this one. What's with the 9 in the date?

that the coin is a weirdo.
Canadian nickels are NOT one of my strengths, BUT from the picture of that '9',
it looks as though either the die or the coin has been worked on.

Why re work the '9'?
The '6' or more probably the '1' perhaps, but I don't understand the '9'!

I stand to learn.

I have no clue either! If it was PMD, you'd think that upturned part could be picked off the coin or something. How could it rotate that far and not detach? And wouldn't there be a lot of damage where it was moved from?

Looks like PMD to me. There is also damage on the left side of the loop in the 9.

The bottom part of the 9 has been hit with something and pushed the tail up.

I've seen a couple of other coins like this with the same effect, one a nickel and the other a penny. Kind of a neat novelty, but no added value IMHO.

PMD ............ this is a very common example. See this on larger coins such as dollars and fifity cents.

In my opinion, it looks like a mint error. I have seen alot of images of nickel errors but nothing like this. So if this this is a mint error it could be worth more than it is already. It is collection worthy.
