I'm wondering if anyone has ever seen a "smudge" or "smear" on a coin in a silver proof set. I just received a 2001 and 2002 and in the 01 the dime, and one quarter have a light almost finger print smudge on the obverse. Then in the 02 the cent has a very obvious smear across the bust and into the field. It doesn't appear to be from a finger print. Just a smear. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has seen this before. The cases don't appear to have ever been opened or tampered with. I was a bit disappointed to say the least after noticing this.

Also, picked up the 2009 silver quarter set. It looks fine.

I've seen this before on modern proof sets. Most likely it's grease or machine oil.

I have a Bicentennial Proof Quarter with a fingerprint right smack on Washington's face. It is still in the mint packaging and has never been opened. One of my Perth Mint coins has a hair in the sealed capsule. I've seen other sets with fingerprints on them, there is quality control but sometimes there is a slip up. I'd return it if you can.

Yeah, it looks like it is grease or oil. I may try to return it but I may be stuck with it.
