Is the mark between the mint mark and the bust a die gouge? If not what is it?
Thanks for any help.
Pete

to CCF. It looks like a gouge. Your coins has a nice MAD also "if the reverse is centered", but not quite enough for a premium.

Thanks, John1 - I am really a novice at all this even though my first collection activity was going through pocket change in the 1940s looking for Lincoln Cents and Barber Half-Dollars! The way I understand it, MAD means "misaligned die" - is that correct?
I should have posted an image of the reverse also. I cannot figure out a way to post an image of the reverse without starting a new thread because there appears to be no way to upload an image on a reply. I did post it in photobucket, so perhaps that link will work:

Thanks for your help.

One more question: I found where there are "Offset Die Misalignment Strikes" and "Vertical Die Misalignment Strikes". What is the difference?

Both are technical terms that describe the location of the adjustable die. One die(anvil)is stationary, one is adjustable (hammer). We used to think that the obverse is the hammer die, but this changed a while back. Thus now we find MAD on reverses. But both terms are used to identify the incorrect location of the hammer die. Difference? To me, it just confuses the matter. MAD covers all the bases. IMOHO
