Well as you all know, I now have the VAM sickness like everyone else here. :D

Now I've got my dad (who by the way got me into coin collecting a long time ago) hooked on Vamming as well...

He's got an 1879 Philly Morgan that I can't seem to find anything on, at least with regards to what I found on his coin.

Take a look at the 'R' in Pluribus and let me know if you see what I see. Is this a VAM, if so which one, if not do you think this could be a new VAM? I've looked at VAMWORLD and can't seem to find anything like this.

Thanks in advance...

Here's the reverse just in case..

It almost looks like a planchet flaw to me or possibly a struck through error? The shape(s) and location do not line up with anything on the reverse to be the result of a die clash. If it were a die marker for a VAM it would surely be part of the VAM description.

Dave, thanks! That's what I thought as well in terms of the VAM markers, I'm not seeing any. This is a circulated coin but the marks in the 'R' I've never seen before. Very curious and truly intriguing piece.

Well it's for sure a VAM! All Morgan and Peace dollars are, which one though, that is the question. Tough to tell (I'm no expert on 1879's either), but the R looks like it had a die chip in it, that broke out, causing a blob to appear there. The plus side is, no matter which VAM it ends up being it won't add anything to the value, as there aren't any great rare or collected 1879-P VAMs. Nothing in the TOp100 or Hot50 or any other lists I've seen that people collect.
