I need some help here. I never really had any precious metals in my room, but ever since my room got painted, anything copper started to tone and fast. It's been a while since my room was painted, but copper still tones fast and I need a place to keep my Canadian 2012 penny's where they won't tone. They aren't in roles and in plastic-type containers they will tone like some other pennies I have. If anyone has any information, please help.

Send note to s If the plastic containers are PVC then that is what is causing the toning

Obviously you used Latex paint which is water based. As it dries, that water is emitted in the form of moisture in the air. That moisture, a little CO2 in the air also, common, will slowly change anything Copper to stain, tarnish, tone or whatever you want to call it. Although the paint may feel dry to the touch, it will emit moisture for some time unless you really do some dehumidifying. If you have a dehumidifier, use it to get rid of as much moisture in that room as possible. In the meantime, move all your coins to another location at least for now. Also, purchase some Zip lock plastic bags and put as many of your coins in those, push out as much air as possible, seal. I have most of my valuable coins in Albums and all are in Zip Lock Plastic Bags all the time. No air, no moisture, etc. to attack your coins. If all your coins are in those, you could leave them in that room since nothing can get to those coins, they will stop toning. One more sure way to stop that toning would be to simply send me all your coins and no more problems.

Humm, so what if you were to paint the inside of a cup, let it dry just a bit, then flip it upside down over a coin you want toned?

Yes, you can remove "toning" which seems to be a buzz word in the numismatic field for oxidation, corrosion, patina. It is the results of sulfur and oxygen in the air, along with moisture and temperature. As with most patina's used in the art metal field. getting it to stop/ slow down will be the problem. I have no desire to start a flame war on the subject of toning, which the colors are related to the thickness of the oxidation on the coins surface. Take a look at my post on the book by Mr.White in this thread. http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...Y_ID=1350455 He also discusses the interceptor bags that claim to stop or slow down the oxidation.

You can never completely stop the toning process. However, you can significantly slow the rate by protecting your coins from air.
My method is the "multiple layers of protection" technique. To nearly stop the process I use as many layers and protection methods as possible. Here's what I do:
1) Rinse with acetone and put into an airtite. 2) Put the airtite into a 2x2. 3) Put the 2x2 into a binder page. 4) Put the binder pages into a giant ziplock with a desiccant pack and a cleaned copper cent. 5) Optional - Put the ziplock into another ziplock. 6) Put the ziplocks into tupperware type container. 7) Store tupperware in a constant temperature environment.

Actually that is what I do with all my Albums. One Zip Lock bag inside another.

I have my IHCs in kointainers, which are in quarter sized 2x2 flips, and then in binder pages.
