Yesterday I had an interesting "noodling" experience. Actually, it did not start that way. My bag of 50 cent pieces from the bank were all 2012 dated

But I thought I would "give it a go".
My first surprise was that some of the coins had a distinct "black" luster under lamplight. Quite different from the normal silver luster.
Upon further inspection I noted that the "black" luster 50 cent coins were all thicker than the normal coins.
I also noted that the lettering on the obverse appeared more "flat" on the "black" luster coins.
I tried very hard to photograph these "mint" coins. Very challenging. I have attached the results below.

I would be very interested in comments from other members.

Can you weigh them accurately?

The darker coin almost looks like a specimen strike.

I will try to weigh them.
What surprised me was that the orange 50 cent coin bags contained so many of these "Black toned, thick planchet coins".
I have a page full of these coins in my collection now

Squire, is this the 2012 lot from back at the bottom of page?:

I'd reckon Enworb's on the money with the specimen strikes. Perhaps they had some left over from mint set production?
Either way, so glad that 2012 50c have become your thing!

No "The Unicorn", this is a new batch of "near mint condition" 50 cent coins that I picked up from the bank yesterday. My heart sank when I examined these in greater detail.
"Not those d*** 2012 coins again" . "Was so looking forward to a selection of potential "incuse", "twist tops" etc." .

However, the results surprised me. 50 cent coins are great to noodle through, old or new !

That's incredible Squire!

You're quite fortunate.

I would love to noodle a bag of UNCs.

Perhaps you've become the Man from UNCle

All I can say is that the story is in your fantastic photo montage. Your efforts seem to indicate a penchant for something offering more than Paint.

Thanks FNQ.
This is how I did it:

It took me quite a long time yesterday evening to take the required photo's. Brilliant uncirculated coins reflect so much of their surroundings that features on the coin are difficult to capture.

After taking the photo's, I downloaded these onto my computer and previewed these in the Windows Picture and Fax viewer.

I then opened Paintshop Pro 6 and performed Capture - Start.
This permitted me to very rapidly select relevant parts of the photos.

I then opened Microsoft Word and created a document. Inserted the images from Paintshop Pro (select - copy - paste). Word gives the great flexibility of adding text arrows etc.

Finally, Paintshop Pro was used to Capture - Start the relevant part of the composition in Word. This was saved as a jpeg file and reduced in size to be consistent with CCF limitations.

In spite of the many steps, the whole process took me all of 10 minutes .

PS. I spent so much time last night trying to capture a good photo that it got quite late. This morning when the alarm woke me I felt like a very old UNCle
