Hello all I am new here to the forum and fairly new to the coin collecting addiction. I scored some dimes at an auction awhile back and discovered what appears to possibly be a 42/1D. It doesn't look like all the other pics I've seen, the pic posted is not mine and hopefully it is ok to post. I'm still trying to figure out how to take quality pictures. I am considering getting it graded if it is a true 42/1, because I think it would grade very high and has full bands. Thank you

This is my actual dime. Looks like it is doubled to me, but that first pic is of one that just sold for a couple hundred dollars.

I have a 42/1 and this is definitely not one. this is a 1942 double die obv and is a known variety. here is the overdate to compare

Thank you Panzaldi for the pic and reply Is that Philadelphia? Mine is a Denver which I think looks different, but mine doesn't look like most of them. I was wondering if there are different varieties of the Denver. I added the link to where I borrowed the reference pic from http://www.ebay.com/itm/EXTREMELY-R...t_2245wt_760

Quote: Mine is a Denver which I think looks different, but mine doesn't look like most of them. I was wondering if there are different varieties of the Denver. Welcome to Coin Community, Heavy Leather. You've got that right - Panzaldi's coin is a Philly mintage, and the Denver version (there's only one) is a bit more subtle. I would expect to see more around the 4 in the date than yours shows, though, so I'm not inclined to think it's the overdate. Have a look here: http://blog.davidlawrence.com/index...-6-194241-d/Oh, and I may be wrong but I think someone's going to be very disappointed about that ebay coin.

Thank you both for the warm welcome and thank you SD for that very helpful link. I am sure that it is not a 42/1, but it only cost 3 bux so in the book it goes.

agreed, not the 1942/1 D.
There are a number of diagnostics, which you do not have.

The ebay coin is Machine Doubling worth melt value The OP coin picture is rather small, but after blowing it up I can't see the diagnostics of the 42/1-D dime.

That ebay seller has over 4000 positive feedback, but zero knowledge of what a 42/41 D dime. New collectors should always buy PCGS, NGC or ANACS authenticated coin of this one! Unless the buyer is knowledgeable of what's a 42/41 D "IS"!
