This is a Frankfurt Taler I've added to my German Free City collection. In August of 1863 there was an Assembly of German Princes that were trying to unify Germany. Prussia would not come to the meeting, and Austria's hope of a Unified Germany ended. Within 3yrs Austria and Prussia would go to War, and Prussia was the Victor. The Prussian Victory over Austria during the 1866 War, United the Northern German States under Prussian rule. After the 1871 Franco-Prussian War, all of Germany United to form the German Empire, but Austria was not included.

Mintage : 20,000
Minted at the Frankfurt Mint
Mint Official : A. V. Nordheim was the die engraver for this coin. Going through what data I have, I have not been able to find out who the Head of the Mint was.

I have read that thread, and you have done a great amount of research for that project. I like what your doing and the history behind it.
This year I am spending a lot of time finishing off a collection of Talers from the 18th to 19th century Free Cities of Germany. 19th century Frankfurt is almost complete. At the same time I am also working on the commemoratives Talers from Bavaria.
Here are a few more Frankfurt Talers from my Free Cities of Germany collection.

Those coins are in great condition! I like thalers - they are nice large pieces of silver to hold in your hand and link to the history (unfortunately a lot of other people think so too - hence the prices). It sounds like you have a definite goal in mind too - which leads to a great project. It's interesting that you are focussing on the free cities (and commemoratives) while I'm really trying to focus on the royality (and the work-horse coins) - so very complimentary projects.

Best of luck with it

Thank you. For the last 45yrs my goal has been to put together a nice collection of Free City Talers and commemoratives. The only other coins I collect are the Vicariate issues from Saxony.
Here are two coins from the collection. One is a commemorative 2Taler from Bavaria that commemorates the wedding of the Bavarian Kings son to the daughter of the Prussian King. The second photo is a Saxony 1792 Vicariate 2/3Taler with adjustment marks which was common during the 16th to the mid 18th centuries.

Regandon, I appreciate your sense in history in relation to the coins. Besides buying a gorgeous coin, enjoying its design or leave it as an investment, but what you know about the history behind the coin is a bonus to oneself. The last point is the soul of this hobby.

Here is another commemorative from the Free Cities collection. It is from Frankfurt. It commemorates the centennial of the birth of Schiller, who was a German poet, philosopher, historian, and playwright.

Thank you wonghinghi. I come from a German family, my grandmother was from Bavaria and my grandfather was from Prussia. This collection is all about the history of Germany and will be handed down to my daughter and granddaughters. My daughter has her degree like I do in European History. Our main interest is in 16th to 19th century Germany.

Regandon, nice to know you are also a history fan. Though you are a German, you write good English, I am always jealous of most Europeans who are capable of learning more than one language. I do collect German/European Coins, from 17th to 20th Century. I am now studying the history of Napolean by myself (for my own. I recently posted two coins that were from Napolean era. I have over 1300-1400 silver coins, about half of them are European and of the European coins, 1/4 the German coins, of the German coins, 1/2 are Prussian. I have the coins from Frederick I to William II. German history and European history were amazing, they are great topics to study... Don't bore you, talk later.

I recently began collecting German States Talers, with a special emphasis on the Free Cities of the Hanesatic League. I particularly like the coins from Hamburg, Bremen, and Luebeck. I also am doing a set from Frankfurt am Main. I've become quite particular in my old age and no longer collect them in the "raw" state, but mostly in NGC holders. You have some beautiful 2 Gulden coins! If I can figure out how to post photos of my Frankfurt coins, I will do so in a later post.

Those are some very beautiful examples, with appealing toning of the various Frankfurter Gedenkthaler. Witness for example the detail on your Gedenkthaler zum Fürstentag, 1863 - the engraver actually managed to depict people looking out of the windows.

Frankfurt is my home city, and I have a few as well, some of which I think were obtained from circulation by one of my ancestors in the 19th century.

If I may, here are some Frankfurt coin depicting the city as seen from the river Main.

That's a beautiful Contribution gold coin! I have one of the last Contribution Talers minted in silver. Will post an image later. My coins are all NGC certified and encapsulated. My coin is dated 1796, and is NGC graded as MS 65.
