Although I am going to put together an album of Presidential dollars, and I was thrilled that they had proposed the legislation to have new designs on our coinage, I was disappointed to see the lack of artistic merit that they ended up with.

There is nothing beautiful about the design of the coins. Most of them are just ugly "heads" placed on a disk. I would not want to spend a lot of extra money to add a silver version to my collection.

Why did the art committee that oversees these projects allow such disgraceful work on our coinage while they seem to be overly concerned on the First Lady gold coins?

I think it is a matter of money. The mint is trying to impress the wealthy collector and cares not for the average "Joe"

What say ye?

The artistic merit, or rather the lack thereof, in U.S. Mint products has been pathetic for decades, in my opinion. Presidents on coins has gotten old. New designs are needed, but the people responsible for selecting those designs have no vision. All their taste is in their mouths. Then we have legislators like the bunch from Virginia who get laws passed that dictate that Jefferson will continue to be on the nickel in perpetuity. I wonder if the Illinois delegation will lobby for Lincoln to remain on the cent forever, too.

The vast majority of designs for the modern commemoratives could have been great, but they all look "flat" and uninspired. At least they don't all feature dead presidents, and I suppose that is something positive.

My opinion of the Presidential dollars is that they are just about the ugliest things to come out of the mint. The Sac dollar is actually kind of pretty to me, and I'd rather they stick with it if they insist on circulating a dollar coin.

*end of highly opinionated rant*

Bring back silver coins the size of a silver dollar, but make them $20 pieces. Place a design of a beautiful woman on the obverse and the Twin Towers with an Eagle on the reverse.

Then send them into circulation, don't sell them in rolls or mint bags, but let everyone "find" them.

IMHO I really don't think they have much eye candy. I have always wanted to see the US do another bi-metalic coin but as a common practice. Like this beauty.

President dollars... Ugly or Beautiful?

The men's faces are what they are, fairly ugly, but given the material to work with (presidents) are full of history. Perhaps Americans should elect some beautiful women into office so we can have their beautiful faces on the coins. LOL

Having the regular information on the edge, date etc, leaves the field less cluttered. Try and imagine where you would put "in God we trust" "2007" etc on the obverse. The image of the president would have to be smaller to allow room. Beside's the edge lettering is cool.

You want beautiful dollar coins? Flip them over! That's Liberty on the reverse of the dollar and she's a beauty.

So my opinion is the coin is half beautiful and half historic... and cool on its side.

True. Lady Liberty is done very well and is always overlooked with all the scrupulous opinions of the obverse portrait. I personally am always a fan of eagles on coins. I'd get every single coin I could of these here and abroad.

Actually, I kind of like the designs & the side lettering. Especially the reverse.

I agree with double die - they should have actual silver $20 coins put into general circulation. The "beautiful woman" could be the " Peace dollar" woman. I like the idea of Twin Towers &/or the Eagle, especially the Eagle from the Peace dollars on the reverse.

To mint the Eagles like they do now with a face value of $1, but to buy one costs $20 is silly.

I agree with everyone, they aren't the most attractive coins out there. I do hope they will generate more interest in numismatics.

I must admit that I am a bi-metallic collector and do not think you could find better looking coins (in some cases) the th bi-metallics.... but then I am biased! Look at the fine example that graceoutcast posted.

I do like dollar coins, though, Presidents included. I use them as much as I can. I like that Brazil bi-metallic coin too.
Here is the $2 bi-metallic concept coin I made and proposed to various members of Congress:

dcarr,

They're beautiful! I think that if the coin is a $2 coin, for instance, it should have $2 worth of silver, along with the other metals in it. Nice design though!
