On this 2013 Toonie it appears there is an 'error' caused by the addition of '2 dollars' on the edge. The rim and reverse are slightly bent.
Anyone else notice this? On my 2012 toonies with similar letter edging the faces of the coin are fine

You are right, it is from the edge lettering. They are not rare, but very common. I wouldn't classify it as an error, although others might. To me it is just a case of the RCM not doing enough testing.

I've noticed the same thing with the Toonie. Makes it look like crap IMHO but the concept of edge lettering has always appealed to me. Too bad.

I know, right. They have this awesome concept that would be really cool and make the coins look very professional, but they can't implement it so that it looks that way. Mind you, it looks fine from the edge, but it really does mess up the rev. and obv.

the mushy edges are very common, coins without this "error" (aka poor quality) are much harder to find.

Unlike other countries with edge lettering, the RCM puts the lettering on at the planchet rimming stage, which requires a lot of pressure. For other countries, usually the edge lettering is part of the collar die. For our twoonie, the collar die only has the reeding/denticles.

I suspect that pressure, which is not confined, as it would be by the hammer and anvil dies - allows the metal to deform perpendicular to the pressure point of the letters being pushed into the rim.

We had a mint roll of new toonies at work and literally all of them had this in some form. It really makes them look bad.

Does this decrease the grade a lot?

Not really, unless you are counting eye-appeal...
