I found these IHC's on ebay and it so irrates me to see them cleaned just to get them sold to people who are unaware of the effect of the numismatic value drop on them.
Unfortunately the uninformed buyer will usually choose a bright and shiny coin over a dull crusty one.I agree it is irritating just like the vast amount of artificially toned coins for sale
Just to play devils advocate there are some people who just dont care if its cleaned as long as it looks nice. I do agree though a good number of those are sold to people who just cant see it or dont know
Anyone buying coins on ebay is (for the most part) looking to find a bargain, as are most ebay shoppers. Cleaned, scratched, or otherwise damaged coins (especially those of key/semi-key dates) often bring a pretty penny due to the large amount of bidders looking to fill their albums for a bit of a discount.
I find this to be the case most of the time. However, as others have mentioned, too often do we see sellers that intend to take advantage of the uninformed.
There are so many cleaned IHC's on ebay, It's astounding. What gets me are all the cleaned higher grade (but not MS) being hawked as BU red, it's a shame.
