Hi. I inherited this 1924 St. Gaudens $20 coin from my father. He purchased it in the 70's and it has been in a safe since then. The coin itself appears to be in top condition. However, it is not graded and is set in a 14k bezel with chain. It does not appear, however, that any damage has been done by the bezel. I have had it checked out and confirmed this is neither fake nor a reproduction.

I'd appreciate any assistance in placing a value on this, as I unfortunately need to sell it. I did already get a price from a local dealer, but as I'm totally unfamiliar with coins, I'd like to be sure he's being fair...hence the research.

Just a couple other questions...
Should I sell it as is or remove from the bezel?
If I do remove it, Is it worth grading?
Any recommendations on how to go about selling (coin dealer, ebay, online buyers/dealers)?

Thank you so much in advance!! I love this piece and want to be sure I'm not just giving this away.

Michele

Welcome to Coin Community, Desertbell.

Your St. Gaudens is a very common coin if from the Philadelphia Mint (any mint mark will be directly above the date). As such, you can plan on it only being worth melt value - they are so commonly available in Mint State that there's very little or no premium.

Yes, the damage inflicted by the bezel would be "officially" considered damage and would therefore result in a "Details" grade, lessening the value. It's for this reason that I'm quite sure it's only worth melt (about $1350 today) or a very little bit above. With that in mind, a dealer will make a purchase offer allowing him to make some profit on resale, so you won't see melt value from him. You *might* maximize your resale value by leaving it in the bezel and selling the whole thing on ebay, but it's a gamble especially if you're not an experienced ebay seller.

Of course, the branch mint examples (Denver and San Francisco) are different beasts entirely, so please have a look above the date and report back if it's got a mint mark.

Michele, I saw your other thread and chose to concentrate everything into this one; it's better for it all to be here in Classic Coins anyway. So I moved your images into this thread as well.

This is a Philadelphia coin, showing a little bit of wear, so everything I said above about it is probably true.

Thank you so much for your responses. It is much appreciated. I have decided to go ahead and try selling it on ebay, now that I have a better idea on value from you and other sources. I too wish I didn't have to sell it, but circumstances dictate otherwise thank you again!

If you can avoid selling it as I realized from your forum that you don't seem very keen to sell it, it is a nice memoir to have, especially as it's gifted by your father. And in case you do want to sell it, please contact a coin dealer, who will give you a fair deal.

Looks like all good advice here from respected CCF folks.

Assuming that it's gold, the bezel probably has worth, too. If you do find a local dealer to buy the items, you might see if they are PCGS or ANACS members which is generally reassuring of fair play. The dealer needs to make a profit to stay in business, yet coins such as yours tend to sell or flip quickly. A reputable dealer will thus work on a low profit margin. IMHO, your coin is not worth paying for a certification fee. My guess on your coin alone is $1,300 or so. Best wishes ...

I agree with other CCF members on the coin.

And it was mentioned that the bezel will have value.
IMO that bezel could have $75 to $100 ... Or more in gold
And you mentioned a chain/necklace, if it is gold a medium weight
chain could have another $100 to $200 in gold... If it is a heavy chain ...
much more.

May we ask you how much the dealer offered you on the item?
