Quote: this is what I keep telling myself as I pay 2x spot for "old gold" That's another attractive quarter-eagle. Paying double melt for "old gold" is questionable though. When speaking of quarter-eagles that's $350 right now and $700 on Half eagles. If buying uncertified type coins, there is no reason to pay that much. I think you mentioned a CoinFacts membership? That makes it easy to view auction results for certified pieces. Spending some time reviewing results is beneficial when bidding. Also remember that raw coins almost always sell at a significant discount to pieces certified by a top TPG.

BH1964, thank you for the feedback and kind comment. I paid exactly $350 for this coin. I absolutely checked auction results on HA and TT and through coinfacts in general while eying this one. I graded this coin as AU55 IMO and unless PCGS comes in lower than any AU grade, I believe current market will at least hold my investment price for now.
If anyone can point me to a dealer selling quarter-eagles a hundred less than I paid (250), in the same condition raw (condition I define as uncleaned and AU to choice AU), I will buy 5 of them today and paypal the money ASAP, no joke. Just let me know.

Nice but I think at most major coin shows or calling one of the bigger bullion dealers like Silvertowne might yeild better results, though you probably won't be able to pick and choose, only get what they send in circulated gold coins. You could return if unhappy but that adds to expense and ties up funds for a week or so. I used to use a wholesaler to get my clients Saints, Indians and Liberty 20,10 5 at very reasonable prices but never knew the dates until they arrived. They would sell by qty + grade discounts VF-EF-AU-Unc with a percent or two cheaper each 5 coins I purchased. Do some phone shopping if you are just looking for raw gold US coins.

several bullion dealers said they would send quarter eagles guaranteed in "uncirculated or better" and the better pricing I am getting is $374 to $382 for 1843 to 1907 but no promises on the year other than that range. i am going to have to walk into a local coin/pawn shop with cash and waive it and hope the guy has what I want and will talk serious turkey. It seems evident I will not get it online or via phone to bullion houses. In the meantime, I just grabbed a gem 1915 for the same price range as this one and I think that will go MS from a TPG or at worst case, higher AU, pics to come in separate post. If my dreams of PCGS grading come true, I will sell off for a small profit and buy smarter raw from a local dealer as pure investment in hopes of Gold rising again in the coming years. I enjoy fractional gold but I will not pay 15% over spot for 1/10th US Mint if I don't have to. Thanks for the input lads...

I would shop around. Try local coin shops, pawn shops, online dealers, other auctions, online and otherwise. I have some limited experience buying raw gold and submitting it to PCGS for grading. Its a tough one to "win" on but is fun. Kind of like scratch-off Lottery tickets really. It's entertaining but don't plan on getting your money back because most people don't.

I think it could make MS-62 but there is the possibility of a MS-61 because of the marks on the cheekbone. The face is a primary focal area and given the incuse nature of the design, it will be somewhat protected by the fields. Marks in that location will negatively affect the grade more than in other areas like the fields. The luster looks more like a 62/63 which why I think it will be more likely to grade a 62.
