I picked this up today. It appears to be Two Cents fused together with a bronze ring. I am not sure if this is a homemade item or if it had some possible use at the mint.

I think it is thicker than Two Cents put together so I am not sure if there is something in between....

Any ideas?

I can't think of a single reason why the Mint would need to make such an object. There aren't any coin-making tools that look like this.

Of course, I can't think of a good reason why anybody outside the mint would need to make such an object, either. But then, humans rarely need good reasons to do things.

Maybe it was a crude attempt to fool a vending machine ("Oh, I've got two pennies, some copper scrap, a hammer, and far too much free time. Let's see if I can make an imitation [whatever]"). Have you compared its size to contemporary circulation coins?

It is much too thick to be a substitute for a circulation coin. As I look at it, it is quite worn, although the wear marks on the ring are not in the same directions as on the coin. Very odd. I am wondering if it was used in some kind of game as a marker. Or maybe as a piece in a game like shove halfpenny?
