The obverse does not show any signs of clashing or clash clean up so the dies must have been swapped out after the clashing episode. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I looked at the Mad Clashes Website and could not match my coin to any of the ones shown for 1983. My coin has what I think would be called a Retained Cud on the obverse and reverse.

I found this in coins I looked through a few times already but missed this one somehow. The clashing is hidden inside the memorial building but it is very strong and the die polishing is really thick.

Die cracks are not Retained Cuds. On your coin's die for the obverse there may have been one later on in it's die life. But so far it is a die crack. A Cud involves the rim. You coin doesn't show that. Nice reverse clash though. The 1983's suffered a lot of clashes that year.

Very common for that year and I would keep it only for the pre-cud die break on the obverse. I don't see the Cud on the reverse? The clash isn't heavy enough to keep,IMHO.

John1, Have you seen many with clashed letters?

As for the Retained Cuds I thought that if the crack goes from rim to rim it was a Retained Cud. The obverse goes from a very thin crack at the rim up through Lincoln's jacket and back into the rim as a thicker die break.

I was thinking the reverse cracks wear Retained Cud but now I realize they do not conjoin with eachother but the one crack going along the I to the rim is fairly strong and I think it would be considered a break.

Thanks for the help guys.

I guess these must be pretty common other than the die breaks. Here is one that sold on ebay for $2 with the clashed Y. http://www.ebay.com/itm/US-Coin-198...047675.l2557

I thought this coin was the coolest thing in the world when I found it. This is the first clashed letter I have found on a penny, but, I have not been looking at them very long.

Clashed letters on Morgan dollars are a pretty big deal so I figured it would be the same for other coins.

A rim-to-rim crack alone does not make a Cud. A Retained Cud will have a shift between the two broken pieces of die before the broken portion ultimately falls away.

Yes.Most show the Y.The nicer ones show the T Y and the really nice ones show the R T Y.Also I only keep clashed revers's that show above and below the building or if the clash is really bold in the bays.

If you ever find any of the RTY, TY or Y letter transfers and don't want to keep them please let me know. I would be interested in them and would pay small premiums for nice condition examples.

Thanks John, Can you find a link showing what an RTY clash looks like? I am really interested in clashed dies with letter transfer. I don't know what year to search but I did not find any for 1983 on the clash website.

I found a link showing an RTY clash. http://www.maddieclashes.com/TDC-1c-1975D-01.html I hope I can find many of these.

How many boxes of pennies do you think it will take me to find one of these?

Probably a lot. I have looked at around 1.3 million cent and have found only a few since I started roll searching in 1971.Good luck with your hunting.

Thanks John. That is a lot of cents to look at. What is the most dramatic Lincoln error you have found?

I went ahead and uploaded these photos again because I think this is a really cool coin and I am sure others would like to see it.

Here is a picture of a pre-cud.
