this was a tough one for me. it's encased and I cant capture the real surfaces. if we cant get a good grade due to the pics let me know and I will try it again. the obv is a mahogany with touches of olive. the rev is stunning lots of red and luster with a little olive in the center. everything you see. scratches, white spots, glare...is on the holder. if I need to, i'll break it out for better pics as it's screwed lucite. i'd like to get an accurate grade on this. I have had it for many many years and never had it graded.

Details are AU, but I'm not sure about the color, but it might be just the holder.

Looks to be a slider, I don't see much for wear, just the high points. my opinion is AU-58

This coin has not circulated. With that said, yeah, AU58. Numismatists live in a paranoid world these days, so even though a coin shows MS63 (at worst) detail like this one, I don't see a TPG sticking their necks out for it.

Quote: what are you guys seeing that is keeping this from an MS grade? Beats the heck out of me. I suggested it'd grade AU58 because the TPG will look at the slight strike weakness at the very back of the hair and the left tip of LIBERTY and get antsy. The coin has no real wear, though.

it might get a low end MS grade 60/61 but the reverse gunk will likely kick it donw a whole point taking it to AU territory. Might be worth a soak in acetone to see if some of the verdigris comes off, or verdi-care, should not hurt the coin any at all.

I also see a slightly circulated coin. The small rim ding at 11:00 on the obverse (IMO) is not from the initial strike but some PMD. The reverse also appears (again, IMO) to have been cleaned at one time (uneven toning?) I still think this is an awesome Large Cent: AU-58 I would be honored to have this gem in my collection.
