Against my better judgement, I took a chance on this item:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/230969913002

I figured it might just be the optical illusion of thickness, with the square rims typically seen on specimen strikes- but I could not let this auction go - so I bought the darn thing, figuring it was worth the cost of admission, so to speak.

Turns out, this sucker is thick!! Visibly thicker than a normal 1970s specimen strike, and heavier too. Normal weight for 1970s 1-cent coins are 3.24, but this one is 3.40. I imagine it is not alone, the entire strip would have to been rolled like this...

Here it is next to a normal 1975 specimen strike.

Worth $20? Maybe not, but I am happy with it...

Different or unusual is always fun to have. Very nice..!!

Hard to understand how something so obvious as 'too thick and too heavy'.. would get out the mints door.

Nice score, SPP! I went to the above ebay link you posted and almost cringed at the photo of the seller holding the face of the coin like that... In your photo it looks like no harm was done though. Well worth the $20, methinks. Any idea how many pennies are punched from one strip? In other words, how many more of these could possibly be out there from this same strip? It would be worth my while to keep an eye out for another, if I exercised my due diligence and was lucky enough to come across one.
