When I first saw this coin I thought it was a DDO. There appears to be doubling on the TY of Liberty. What do you think?

I noticed the last digit of the date has what appears to be MD'ing. How does MD only affect one digit and not all digits?

Did the ear get dinged or could it be doubling.

Thanks

I don't see any hub doubling. The devices look wider, but I'm thinking circulation damage. There is some Machine Doubling on the last 9 of the date on the outside.

Thanks for the quick reply Coop. I guess I don't fully understand how MDing happens. The last nine obviously shows Machine Doubling. But how does it affects only one 9 in the date and not the others. It was my understanding that MD is from press vibrations or a shift in the die.

It is caused by die movement during the strike. It can be minor or major if the machine is loose. Even from strike to strike the doubling can be different:

These were found in a roll of OBWs that I went through. Note each coin has different doubling.

Ahhh....ok...So one side of the die might not be striking flat making only that side move. Thanks makes sense to me now..Thanks again for your help!
