Well, now that my first year of graduate school is over, I'm taking some time this summer to focus on roll hunting. I figure I can leisurely do a box of pennies every two weeks and ten rolls of dimes a week.
Today's week one of my summer hunting. Haven't started the pennies yet, but I took a look at the dimes - ten solid rolls of 2013-D, which seems boring. Guess I'll check them out for errors, but all in all the dimes weren't very fun. Ah, well. I'll start pennies soon and I'll post any cool finds I get in those. FYI - some coin collectors would be interested in the 2013 dimes - FYI. not me, but I know people like to get their hand on the new stuff

Know how you feel. I got that in pennies one time.

I'm fifteen rolls into the pennies now, and it started out pretty slowly. I got nothing of interest to me in the first seven rolls. The next eight gave me ten coins - two Canadian (1980 and 2006 - now my most recently dated Canadian coin), two wheat cents, five S-mint Memorial cents, and a 1959 in such beautiful condition for its age that I had to set it aside.
No pictures yet, but they will be forthcoming when I have completed the box and seen what other delights I might find.
Update - rolls 16-20 only yielded one coin, but it's now my oldest find. 1906 Indian Head!

Great score with the indian head. I have yet to find one roll hunting. Good vibes this summer for your searching.

Thanks. Final update for the night, at twenty rolls sorted. Three Canadian cents, one Indian Head cent, two wheat cents, the 1959, six S-mint Memorial cents, a New Zealand five cent piece, and a 2005 French obverse 2 Euro cent coin.

The key to successful dime roll hunting is searching larger volumes. You may want to try only customer-wrapped rolls, to avoid getting brand new dimes. I find hundreds of silvers, mercs, silver proof, clad proof, Barbers, and silver Canadians by searching less than $25k a year. Good luck.

I don't have the kind of money to be able to search larger quantities of dimes at a time, and no bank around here accepts CWRs - you either send them through their counter yourself, or they break the rolls and send them through a counter, so nothing in customer wrapping is ever available to another customer later. So that's unfortunately not an option.

There were a couple more S-mint, wheat cents, and Canadian pennies in that box. Got through my second box, and my second set of dimes now. I got a 1993 Canadian dime out of the second group of dimes, and box two gave me a total of 12 Canadian pennies, 9 S-mint LMCs (5 of which are 1970-S), and 7 LWCs. My brother found and gave me a 1953-D LWC as well. I'm setting aside the coins in a cigar box for now. Once the summer is over, I'll give a final tally and some pictures of the best things (as well as pictures of the lot). Went to the bank today and got more dimes. They couldn't spare a full box of pennies this time, so I'm waiting until next week. Got myself five rolls of nickels (can recycling has brought me a spare $10 that I thought I should add to the hunting budget). Got a 1941-D nickel out of the five rolls, and thought I should keep it - War Nickels and earlier are my interests there. And just to add to the fun, when dumping today I checked the coin counter's reject tray. Pulled out a beat up quarter (1967), a penny, and a 1991 five pence. On top of that, the counter managed to determine that I put in 50 cents more than I actually did, so I got a free 50 cents into my account. Not bad. Edit: So the dimes were again solid 2013. Decided I didn't have enough hunting, so I went and dumped. Got new nickels and dimes, and also picked up every half dollar I could from every bank and credit union I hit. $3.50 in loose halves, nothing special. So far nothing from the second batch of dimes today. Second batch of nickels today, though, and pulled out a 1986 Canadian and 1999-S. Yep. Proof nickel acquired from a roll and my first proof roll find ever.

Did another batch of dimes, nickels, and a box of pennies over the weekend.
Nothing from dimes, nickels gave me a few keepers - a 1999 Canadian, 1946-S, 1940, 1940-S, and a 1937-74 Dominican 5 centavos (too worn to determine date).
The box of pennies was a small joy - 6 wheats, five from the 50s and one from the 40s, 3 Canadian, and 13 S-mint memorial (three of which were 1970-S).
Those will go into the cigar box with their companions. Looking forward to more nickels and dimes this week, and maybe another box of pennies.

So this week was fun - last week before I start working on a paper this summer, so I thought I'd do a bit extra with hunting. Had a box of pennies which turned up a good mix of later wheats, Canadians, and S-mints. Picked up two 1967 Kennedy halves on Tuesday from a teller's tray. Did a total of 19 rolls of halves, producing a 1952 Franklin. Did 41 rolls of dimes this week, nabbing a 1947 and 1948-D out of the mix. Got two UK 5 pence in one roll as well. Did 41 rolls of nickels as well, pulling a 2008 Mexican 50 centavos, 1943-S and 45-P War Nickels, a UK 20 pence, 1984 and 86 Canadians, and a whole mess of Jeffersons - four 1970-S business strikes, five 1941s, one 1939, one 1940, one 1949-D that I'll have to look at under magnification (I don't think it's a D/S, though), and a 1999-D with a very noticeable misaligned die (I'd say 5% misaligned). And one of the tellers at my dump bank had a 2004 Spanish obverse Euro cent that he saved for me. Photos forthcoming.

Now that I've sorted through everything I picked up during the week of June 2-8th, here are some pictures of those finds. I'll be doing this for particularly productive weeks, and once more with everything I found at the end of the summer. I went through three rolls of dimes, five rolls of nickels, and a bag containing $60.50 in halves at the beginning of the weekend to finish my week. Totaling my rolls, I went through a box of pennies, nearly a box each of nickels and dimes, and the equivalent of half a box of half dollars this week. So here's everything I found this week together. The US non-silver, including the two NIFC half dollars I picked up from my partial bag. Five wheats and 11 LMC S-mints among the pennies. One of the nickels is sitting on top of another in the top row. 1999-D nickel with a slight misaligned die - lots of light to highlight the misalignment. The same nickel, with lighting to show the details. My foreign finds - a teller at my dump bank saved the Euro cent for me. Everything else here came in rolls. And the silver. The dimes are 1948-D and 1947 (I'll have to give the 47 an acetone bath at some point). Obverses Reverses

I search quite a bit for my blog, and I've had similar results for both customer wrapped rolls and the machine wrapped. Sometimes I even prefer the machine wrapped because I have a much higher confidence that the rolls have the correct number of coins in them. (Though, I did once get like 50 CWRs with an extra dime in each of them). The secret is definitely volume, though you seem to have a fair bit of luck on your side. I have yet to pull anything older than a wheatie and you're already getting Indian heads.

amazing finds SR . Regarding the foreign finds I am so glad you got that British five pence ! Those cupronickel 5 pence coins are now being gradually removed from circulation over here and will eventually be replaced by steel core ones so you got yourself a 5p that will soon be hard to find......
