I am new to this forum. Call me Tolknor
My collecting intrest is very new.

I recently picked up some coins and am having trouble placing them.

I have a Draped Bust Heraldic Eagle Half Dollar. It looks like the 1806 on listed at http://www.coincommunity.com/coin_h...ic_eagle.asp

But it is dated 1797. It does not have the type of back that the 1797 ones of the similar front designs ones have. What am I missing?

I am on yahoo as realgulliver

Welcome to Coin Community, Tolknor. I do hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but the point you're missing about your Half Dollar is that it's almost certainly a counterfeit.

I am going to move this thread to the Main Coin Forum, where it will get better exposure.

Welcome to the forum Tolknor. (Does your user name have anything to do with Tolkein?)

Sorry to hear about your unfortunate trade. This forum is a good start to educate anyone in this hobby. Hope to see more posts from you in the future.

Superdave, how could you tell it was counterfeit?

Tolknor had it figured him/herself. There were no 1797's minted with the 1806 reverse. In 1797, they didn't know what the 1806 reverse would look like.

Sorry, it's a counterfeit, no more, no less. Unfortunately a very common trick, but nothing magical about it.

But is it a modern fake, or a contemporary counterfeit? (made in the 1800's to late 1830's)

the coin would need to be seen to determine that but I would be willing to bet dollars to doughnuts that its a rather recent forgery
